Question on Black Bean Patties

I tried making these this past weekend. They did not come out very well. I'm sure I did something wrong.
My first problem was you can't find chipolte peppers in adobo sauce around here anywhere. I've tried before because of another recipe and 3 supermarkets and the international market do not have them. I tried again last week to no avail. So I substituted regular hot peppers no sauce.
But they came out so wet they didn't stay together well. I added more bread to try and dry them out a little but that didn't really help. Other than those two alterations, I followed the recipe.

Any suggestions because they tasted really good, they just totally crumbled.

Hi
sorry, I used "Andrea's Southwestern Black Bean Cakes with Guacamole - 4 Servings " recipe. The one Teresadenisa had re-posted not too long ago. Yes i did drain the beans. I would think that minus the sauce, if anything they would have been dry. Go figure!

Hi, Tara --

I deviated from the recipe in two ways -- I didn't use any hot peppers (though now I feel brave enough to add half of one chipotle...did you check in the authentic mexican section, that's where the superwalmart here keeps them) Also I made them on the foreman grill so I wouldn't have to flip them. The mixture didn't seem overly wet to me, it formed nice patties. In fact, I thought the grill may have dried them out a touch. I don't know where the extra liquid might have come from, sorry to be no help.

They are yummy, though, aren't they? I guess if they're a mess, you could just wrap them up in a tortilla. =)

Hi!

Well, I don't usually go to the Super Walmart. I find it intimidating! :) And the prices aren't really better than my supermarket. But I'll have to look there. We have a large Spanish population here, so I look in the Spanish foods sections of all the supermarkets. Nothing.

But maybe having the George Foreman grill would help too. I did it on the outside grill.

Oh well, I'd still make them again. They tasted yummy!

I can't comment on the recipe as I haven't tried it, but I am VERY surprised you live somewhere with a large Hispanic population and you can't find these! I've never, ever been to a store that doesn't carry them - though I have only lived in either CA or TX and both areas have large Hispanic populations. As was posted, I can easily find these in WalMart, but also in all my major supermarkets in the Mexican foods section. Here is a page that shows many brands (plus other products, but its the canned chilies you are looking for), it may give you an idea of what you are looking for:

I know! It's crazy. But today, when I went shopping, my kids actually found them for me! I knew I kept them around for some reason. I have looked at this, my regular store, forever and not found them. They were in the aisle with me and spotted them in two seconds. So either I'm blind (possibility) or they are now stocking them.

So we're trying the recipe again tomorrow for dinner!

Well cooked them again tonight and they came out so much better. Plus having the chipolte peppers in there made them more spicy and I like spicy. I don't know if it was the peppers, if it was cause I used a different bread, or what but they did not fall apart this time.

Yay!
