since the first main ingredient isn't "whole" wheat, wouldn't these technically not be South Beach friendly?
Hi Mags,
Forgot to mention I'm a phase 3er, so for me, the rules are somewhat "softer."
For phase 2, there has been another snack discussed (can't remember the exact name of it) with this exact same dilema. This other snack actually had the word "enriched" in the ingredient list as like the 3rd or 4th ingredient but the fiber content was appropiate. The official word was since the fiber content was adequate it was probably made with more "whole wheat" than "enriched" wheat. I think the same principles apply to this snack for phase 2.
I'm off to search for this other approved product. . .

Cathy posted that these are fine:

I find them an AWESOME snack for the kids. We can't get the Newmans or the VitaSpelt pretzel's without driving 15 miles to Whole Foods, so its great that these are that grocery store 3 blocks from my house.
But I would choose to eat them myself, too - ironically I don't like them! They taste a little "sweet" to me and kind of fluffy compared to how dense a regular pretzel is.

Ok, I found the other approved cracker where the ingredient list isn't 100% SBD friendly according to the "rules". Its called Kellog's All Bran crackers.
Here's the nutritional label on the package:

The 3RD ingredient is "enriched" yet these are approved by the nutritionalist b/c of the 5g of fiber. Using that logic, Snyder's Multi Grain Pretzels meet the 3g fiber rule for a snack product and therefore should be approved. The first 3 ingredients in this pretzel are unbleached wheat flour, water & whole what flour. Meeting the 3g fiber tells me more of the product is actually made with the whole wheat flour.
Also, these pretzels are very low in sugar (only 2g) and fat (only 2 g). The other approved crackers have 6g fat & 4g sugars.
Whether approved or not, these will remain in my pantry as a healthy snack for us.
For ha-ha's, I'd like to hear the nutritionalists say on this product especially in light of the approved All Bran Cracker.

Darn my search function! I did a search before posting it & came up with nothing!

It is good to know these are approved. I LOVE the Newman's spelt but have to drive about 15 miles also to get them. I stocked up with several bags on my last shopping trip. When I run out of them, I am going to give these a try.
Thanks for posting this!!!

Erica,
I'm heading off to my very first ever Whole Foods shopping trip this weekend & I'm going to get Spelt pretzels to try. Like you, I'm going to stock up on them (hopefully I like them :))
I found the MultiGrain pretzels in my little hometown which usually carries nothing in the friendly SBD department so you should have no problem finding these even if you live in a hick little town like I do!

Herr's Whole Grain Pretzel Sticks meet the guidelines if you can find them in your area.
Thanks Karen - I'll keep a hopeful eye out for them.
