Just wondering about others...

I feel like the least adventurous person on this board! I'm learning to try new things though and I've found a lot of new foods to eat. I was just wondering what foods others DON'T like. I can't be the only one out there who's scared of egg plant, asparagus and squash! What new foods have you tried and were surprised to like? I just recently tried guacamole and didn't hate it. I eat more veggies. I didn't know that I could ever like WW bread or pasta. I like sugar free candy!! (That was my happiest success since I don't feel cheated when I don't eat the regular candy.)

I don't like most beans (chickpeas and baked beans and refrieds being the exceptions).

I think a lot of it has to do with upbringing. You talk about things like eggplant or squash being "adventurous" - but they were just normal staples in my house when I was a kid. I grew up in an Italian family in coastal CA. My grandparents GREW things like that in their yard. Things like artichokes were a staple (I lived about 30min from Castroville, the artichoke capital of the world). And in CA, avocados and guac are every day foods. Asparagus, figs, persimmons, all sorts of melons, rapini, jicama, dates, citrus - like pommelos, all kinds of fresh fish from the wharf, etc. were things we had all the time. Lots of Mexican inspired foods as well. With all the agriculture there and the availability of amazing fresh produce - I never ate a frozen/canned veggie as a kid. My mom only bought whole wheat bread for sandwiches, so that is just "normal" for me and what I grew up on. As a little girl my favorite lunch was an avo sandwich on whole wheat bread w/jack cheese and lots of alfalfa sprouts. I don't really consider myself "adventurous" either, its just my down-home comfort foods that I was raised on are maybe a little more varied than some.

So, honestly there isn't anything "new" I can think of that I tried since starting South Beach. I had already been exposed to a huge variety of foods as a kid. As for foods I don't like - I hate eggs. I hate a lot of raw veggies - I don't like celery or carrot sticks. I will only eat carrots if they are VERY cooked. I really HATE HATE HATE steamed veggies. I will not touch steamed broccoli with a 10 ft pole. GAG. Makes eating in restaurants difficult because it seems to be the only veggie most have and they only ever steam it. I also will not touch a canned veggie with a 100 ft pole! Again, gag! I don't like almonds - love other nuts, but no almonds for me - too "dry" tasting.

My parents divorced when I was 4 and I was raised by my Dad. When he was little he was forced to eat every veggie imaginable from his grandma's garden and he had to eat it before he left the table. He swore that he wouldn't do that to us. And he didn't. However we weren't exposed to lots of foods because of that. My goal is to find the happy medium. My kids are exposed to lots of things regularly. But I don't force them to eat them. In my experience, it makes them less willing to try new things. I do offer things they don't like though. They've learned to like things and sometimes they like them prepared in different ways. My kids eat things I wouldn't touch because of it! I'm trying really hard to get rid of the little kid attitude that I don't like things. I'm beginning to wonder if I really don't like them or if I just think I don't because my Dad didn't so I must not. (Brainwashing from the time I was little.) This has been a week of great success. I'm not going to lose weight this week. For some reason I'm up 2 pounds. (No big cheats, I swear!) But I'm feeling good about food. I'm trying new things. (Lots of new things on the menu this week!) I'm getting a gym membership and I think I can make it work. I'm organized at home and have kept up on things for nearly a month even with my increasingly busy schedule. I feel very on top of my life. I just thought that SB would help me lose weight. I had no idea I'd get so much of my life organized and that I'd feel so empowered!

I don't like mushrooms (just say no to fungus!) and I don't eat any seafood. Not a big fan of eggplant but I'll eat it if someone serves it. No hardboiled eggs, fried eggs, poached eggs, etc. -- just scrambled w/ cheese or in an omelette (i.e., disguised). When I was a lot younger (maybe 6 or 8) I overdosed on aspirin by accident and my mom shoved a raw egg down my throat to make me vomit. Say no more.

I'm Chinese...also very adventurous...

I don't like melons of any sort, mayonnaise, liver, and the gizzards and FEET of anything.

Don't love beans or raw mushrooms or pork chops but I'll eat them.

You know, I think it's ok that you don't want to eat feet. Really, I'm ok with NO ONE eating feet. Blech.

Honestly, the brains were probably the only thing on that list that I actually didn't mind.
