"No Maltose in Beer" Article. Thoughts?

Although I'm not a beer drinker, my husband is and I've read the anti-beer information regarding Maltose to him from the SBD book. I just read an interesting article: http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/04-22-2004/0002157682&EDATE and was wondering if you have any thoughts on the story?
Of course I'm not going to let HIM know about it!!! :o)
I just read everything and anything I can about SBD to get the big picture as this will be for the rest of my diabetic life!!
Thanks, y'all!!
Sharon

Beer, wine, and hard liquor all have a glycemic index of 0, but this is because it is not a carbohydrate, not because it doesn't affect blood sugar. All alcohol causes the liver to convert glycogen into sugar which then raises blood sugar levels and the corresponding blood glucose-insulin cycle occurs.
This is the latest word from the nutritionists on the official South Beach site regarding beer:
Starting in Phase 2, 1 drink per day for females and 1-2 drinks per day for males is allowed. Beer is fine; light beer would be the best choice. It is suggested that you consume alcohol with a meal. The SBD prefers red wine, but other choices are champagne, vodka, gin, rum and bourbon and beer or ales.
One drink is:
* 12 ounces of beer or ale
* 3-5 ounces of wine
* 1.5 ounces of 80 proof distilled spirits
* Avoid mixers with sugar and fruit juice. Use water, seltzer, club soda or diet soda
Hope this helps.
It does, Cathy, thanks!
