Hi. I am 38 years old and recently told that I have a heart murmer. During my yearly Pap exam, the Gyn doctor told me this, and I'm going for an EKG on the 20th. She also told me I didn't have this a year ago.

I teach water aerobics, somedays I exercise for 3 hours in a row. I am and was under ALOT of stress ... do you believe that stress can cause a murmer? I feel too good for anything to be wrong with my heart.

Confused,

Cyn

Hi Cyn,

A heart murmur can be something that people live perfectly unaffected by. Are you being referred to a cardiologist at all? It's certainly good practice to get you seen by a specialist if this is something new and while I understand it is worrying for you, perhaps the best way to think of it is getting checked out so that you can carry on doing all that you're doing and have your mind put at rest.

Let us know how you get on, and feel free to come back with any other questions in the mean time.

Silver.

Hi, Cyn.....and welcome to the board!

Heart murmurs are a lot more common than you may think! Sometimes doctor's don't "pick them up" for years because they aren't really obvious. Glad your doctor ordered that EKG...and if that test shows anything significant, please ask for a referral to see a good cardiologist. You may need further testing to find out the extent of your particular heart murmur, and you may need more testing to find out exactly what may be the cause of the murmur. Than again, your doctor may have not heard the murmur last year because it wasn't as pronounced.....you may have HAD the murmur, but it wasn't easily heard, you know? At any rate, you're doing all the right things now...getting that EKG is the first step! Let us know what the results are from that EKG, okay? And if your doctor believes this is something that needs further investigation, ask to see a good cardiologist. Good luck, Cyn! If it's any consolation, Hon, I've had a heart murmur for YEARS...and have had no trouble with it or from it! My murmur is obviously very benign...for which I'm very glad! Everyone with a heart murmur needs to have it checked out, though!

Welcoming (((hugs))),

Linda.
