Spiced Chai Tea Smoothie (Phase 1)

Makes 1 serving

Description
Start the day right with this lightly spiced smoothie. The lean protein from the milk and tofu will help keep you satisfied all morning. Tip: Look for silken tofu in the refrigerated section of your market; if it's unavailable, substitute plain nonfat yogurt.

Ingredients
1⁄2 cup nonfat milk
1 chai tea bag
1⁄2 cup light silken tofu
1 tablespoon granular sugar substitute
1⁄4 teaspoon almond extract
1⁄4 teaspoon vanilla extract
6–8 ice cubes
Ground cinnamon for garnish

Instructions

  1. Pour milk into glass measuring cup; warm in microwave for 1 minute. Add tea bag; let steep 10 minutes. Remove tea bag; refrigerate measuring cup for 5 minutes.
  2. In blender or food processor, combine milk mixture and tofu. Add sugar substitute, both extracts, and ice; process until ice is crushed and mixture is frothy. Sprinkle with cinnamon and serve immediately.

I'll have to try this one! Sounds yummy. I'm stumped on what silken tofu is though.. I can feel an adventure at the supermarket coming on.

Interesting!

I'll get some today. I'm going to have to first make the smoothie, have my boyfriend drink it and then tell him what's in it. :-)

I'm thinking the tofu is to give some thickness and creaminess to the smoothie.

Would ff plain yogurt work instead?

I'm just not usre I'm ready for tofu -- even if it is light and silken.

I'm sure the yogurt would work just fine.

I use yogurt in my smoothies all the time and silken tofu when I remember to buy it. Silken tofu gives smoothies a different kind of creaminess.

I always use yogurt in my smoothies, too.

Does the silken tofu change the flavor at all, or just the creaminess factor?
