my father suffered a mini stoke a couple of months ago. he is now depressed, and it seems to only be getting worse. i have a lot of experience with depression myself, so i am very aware of symptoms, treatments, etc.

was wondering though----any specific antidepressants that you would recomend? better results with one versus another?

Just trying to collect some information from others who have experienced this as well. thanks for any help!

After my heart attack I was on prozac, but it didn't work for me. My doc and I tried a number of things, and am now on Effexor XR which has been working pretty well. It's really going to be the doctor's decision, choosing one that works for him and doesn't damage the circulatory system or heart or anything that he may have to beware of. Not every thing works for everyone-heard all the raves about Prozac? I was on many many milligrams and it did not work for me!

Have you thought about getting him into a support group for people that have had strokes? That might be helpful. You may also be able to find one for family members of the affected person, one that tells you how to help the person, and when to back off. Not saying that this is your issue, but when I had my heart attack I was so worried then when I went to see my parents a few months after, I was afraid that they were going to coddle me, not let me do stuff like exercise. But it went well. Just knowing a little about other families that are going through this, and how they cope, can be a huge help.
