Please help me!

I am only 21 years old and I was just referred to a heart specialist today. I have high blood pressure and acute tachycardia. I am overweight and I was on oral contraceptives. My NP put me on the patch today and told me to quit taking the BCPs. I am supposed to have an upcoming appointment with the specialist this Friday if they could get it scheduled then. I am supposed to hear any time.

I am going nuts! My bp is running 140/85 and my rpr is 115. I was diagnosed with a heart murmur when I was 11-12, but the doctor thought I would grow out of it. I then was diagnosed with whitecoat hypertension when I was 18. Then when I was 19 I was diagnosed with borderline hypertension and was put on 5 mg of hydrochlorothiazide (water pill) to lower it and it did.

I made my NP aware of all this before I went on BCPs and she said I would be fine. But in 4 months I have gained 20 lbs and my bp went up 20 points. She took me off the BCPs and referred me to the specialist. She says it's just a precaution since I've had a history of heart problems and it runs rampant in my family. My great grandmother had her first heart attack in her 50's! I'm so scared right now I don't know what to do.

Any suggestions? I'm just making my bp go up even more because I'm stressing out about this, my pulse right now is like over 100. I'm so worried, I'm only 21 and I'm scared!!!

sounds like your doctors are taking good care of you and are on top of things. some women just can't take bcp due to hbp, some just need a different type.

One of the best things you can do is loose the extra weight, watch your caffeine intake and follow your doctor's advice. Be sure to check with your doctor before beginning any exercise program.

relax, check your bp more freqently and follow your doc's advise.

good luck!

SLOW DOWN!!! Just take one thing at a time! You do make your heart race when you stess! Make a list of questions to take with you to the cardiologist every time (if you need to) and listen closely, take notes so you can remember when things happen. The water pill they put you on is used for mild high bp (hypertention) now they will posibly put you on another type. (Are you takig taking meds for your tachycardia? )The important thing is to always go to the doc and to take the meds even when you feel good! I learn that the HARD way it will only make things worse down the road. I also have tachycadia(the worst kind) and high blood pressure (140/90). I would like to help answer any question you have!! I have more info. Feel free to to ask! I can ask my doc questions too! Your not alone and if you pay attention to your bodies needs you will be better yes it is scary and serious but you can live a long and happy live still!!!! Also maybe see about an IUD for birth control (or abstinence) it has no effets to your heart. Be sure you make good choses for you future family!!!

Well, you should be glad that it was caught early so they can do something about it before it gets worse. By letting the doctors know about the heart history in your family helps too. i hope your dr. appointment goes well.
