New Here - Ablation - What to Expect

I'm new to this board. I'm 43 and am scheduled for an ablation on the 15th. I've had 3 hospitalizations since October of 2007 for an arrhythmia. The worst of it was last October when the holter monitor picked up 5000 extra heartbeats during a 24 hour period. When the arrhythmia starts, it feels like my heart is skipping beats. At its worst, my blood pressure drops, as does my potassium. I get light-headed and winded very easily. So my cardiologist sent me to an arrhythmia specialist. Several years ago I had a cardiac catherization and it was pretty uncomfortable and it seems that this procedure is pretty similar. I'm nervous about what to expect. Has anyone had it and how uncomfortable was the procedure? Does it really cure the problem? How often does it show up in another area? I'm hoping that I will not need to have another one of these.

I just merely looked up the term for this condition.

I've had two ablations, a month apart from each other and what the previous poster wrote is pretty much spot on. The worst part really is just laying still so long and being sore from that afterwards. I'm not the type of person that's content to just lay around and that was absolutly irritating for me! lol I was awake for a lot of mine, both of them. I was able to talk to the doctors and let them know if I was in any pain etc. You said you've had a cath done before and you're right, they are pretty much the same thing except once they get in there they do different things. As for curing it.. My first one didn't, that's why I went back for the second one a month later.. My first was done end of Jan '08, my second one was beginning of March '08. I've had great success with the second one though. I went from between 12-15 thousand PVCs a day to just 5 PVCs, so it worked really well for me!! I hope you'll be as lucky! Good luck and keep us posted! If you have any more questions feel free to ask!!

Hello, Rhonda, and welcome to the Heart Health board!! I'm very happy to meet you!

I don't have anything to add to what the other HH members have told you. I've never had an ablation, so I can't speak from experience. I have had
