Soothing Songs Please the Heart

April 15 (HealthDay News) -- If you have heart problems, you might want to plug in that iPod or pop in a CD of mellow songs.

Hospital patients with coronary heart disease reduced their heart rates, breathing rate and blood pressure just by listening to music, a Temple University review of 23 previous studies found.

The report, published in the latest issue of The Cochrane Library, found that the soothing effects were greatest when these patients chose their own tunes. For example, patients' pulse rates fell by more beats per minute when they made the selections compared with those who listened to music selected by researchers.

Sounds like a good idea! :) I like "New Age" type music or my CDs with nature sounds. I often play these when doing my T'ai Chi Chih practice. Encourages the deep slow breathing along wiith the slow movement. :) sometimes I also play some of these CDs for sitting meditation, but I don't practice sitting meditation regularly like I do my T'ai Chi Chih. :P Mostly, sometimes, I just like sitting in the quiet, in a garden, or just in my house, and breathe slowly and deeply. Amazing how calming as well as peaceful that can be. I love just sitting by the redwood trees outdoors (or any trees) and listen to the wind/breeze in the branches, exchange breaths with the trees, listen to birdsong. I had heart surgery March 18th and started doing my T'ai Chi Chih again even before I came home, as a healing practice, as well as visualizations of my heart healing, and me returning to full strength. Music is very healing if it's the right kind, and not jolting or jarring or jagged sounding... ;)

I voted 'other' because I love listening to the 80s music, rather than streams, birds or what-have-you. The 80s music relieves my stress and so, when I'm stressed, overwhelmed and even angry, I pop in my music, put on my earphones and I'm feeling much better in just a short while. I can also get in the mood to clean house if my music is blaring. (Yes, you read it right....(music blaring.) 8^)
