Ticked kitty is peeing

I'm new to the board and have a dilema. I am the proud owner of a 4 1/2 year old cat named Fuzzer. Fuzz looks and acts exactly like a Maine Coone cat, but I'm sure he's not because he was just a farm kitten. Fuzz is a great lover and gives hugs every night when I walk in the door. Big personality, big attitude, and big lover. He gets sassy every once in a while, but we've never had any major problems until now.

My DH and I have been going up north every weekend to work at his brother-in-law's shop. We need to do it to help them out and also for the extra money that they're paying us. Fuzz has always been fine with us going away once in a while and when we came home, everything was always okay. But since we've been gone every weekend this month, he's started to pee on piles of clothes in the basement laundry room. At first it was a pile of towels at the bottom of the stairs, so we threw away the towels, cut up the carpeting and threw that away, and I washed the area with bleach and water. That spot is no longer a problem. Now he's peeing on clothes that are on the floor in front of the washer and dryer. I know that he's ticked at us and is making a statement because the piles of clothes are only about 3 feet away from his litter box.

So, I've identified the cause to his behavior, I've cleaned or washed the items that he's peed on so far. DH says to bring Fuzz with us up north. But, that would mean bringing him up to a cabin that he's not familiar with, leaving him alone all day into the evening, and about 3 1/2 to 4 hours of travel time one way. I'm afraid this will traumatize him even more and cause more problems. Not to mention worrying about him escaping out the door when we get back to the cabin or something like that.

An easy solution to the problem would probably be to stay home. But like I said, we need the money and they need the help. I will be home for the weekend of the 19th, and we have a wedding that we will be home for the weekend of the 26th.

Any other ideas that anyone has for me? sorry this e-mail was so long!

Help!

Hi there, and welcome to cats. I'm not too sure about what to do if he is indeed mad at you, but I would take him to the vet to rule out a possible UTI or other urinary problem. Much more often that not, inapropriate urination is caused by a medical, rather than behavioural, problem.

When we first got our Tasha, she had urinary crystals. She used to pee on our bathmats, which were within feet of her litter box. I suppose she thought because the mats were soft, that it would hurt less to pee on them. When we removed the bathmats, she started to pee on the bare floor immediately in front of her box. At first I thought she didn't like the box, or that she was mad that we weren't home with her all day, or that she was just stressed adjusting to new surroundings. But a trip to the vet told us it was crystals.

Let us know how it goes, and good luck!

Hi tazlester,

I have to agree with everyone that you ought to take your kitty to the vet just in case this is a urinary tract infection.

Thanks everyone! The soonest I can get him in is on Monday at 5:00pm, we'll have to wait until then and deal with him peeing until then at least.

How do you add pictures without purchasing a package and paying every month?

You can create a website here on iVillage, it's free. That's what I did, since I couldn't justify spending $30 or $40 to make my posts look pretty. If you are completely helpless at webpage-making, you can use the Trellix express site builder, which will guide you step-by-step through the process.
