Help, cat missing litter box (m)

I have a 14 year old cat, Maggie. She usually uses her litter box fine but lately she has been missing the box and peeing on the floor. I'm not sure if these are accidents or if she is trying to mark her territory or something. We recently had a baby and there are also more cats wandering around the neighborhood lately.

Do you think she is upset about the baby? She was accidentally shut in our room one day (when the baby was napping) and peed under his crib.

I scoop out her box every day and completely change the litter and clean the box out once a week. I use regular litter, would scoopable be better?

I tried a litter box that was like a big rubbermaid tote with a hole in the lid. She used that a few times and then started peeing on the mat in front of the garage door instead so we're back to just a regular litter box. I've never tried one of the "hooded" litter boxes but I have a feeling that might have the same end result as the one with the hole in the lid.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or do I just have to keep cleaning up her misses and hope she gets over it soon? At least she is generally doing it around her litter box instead of all over the house. With the exception of the one time under the crib.

Hi Linda,

Cats are usually very fastidious about their litter box habits.

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering if she had some kidney problems, she seems to use the litter box an awful lot and drinks quite a bit of water...a whole bowl daily.

She needs to go to the vet for her vaccinations so I'll be sure to ask him about it. Hopefully it is something that we can easily take care of.
