Help! Litter Box Smell Driving Me Crazy

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good litter and/or additive to remove the urine odor? I have two cats, both spayed females (if that matters) and unless I change the entire litter almost daily I can not only smell the urine but FEEL the odor making my throat scratchy. My boyfriend can't smell it but I surely can! I've used everything from Tidy Cats in all its various incarnations to EverClean at $15-$17 a pop along with another $5-$15 for sprays, crystals and/or powders. All these additives and perfumes can't be healthy for the cats or the humans. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

oleander

Hi!

I've always used Arm & Hammer Super Scoop. I only have one cat and scoop twice a day. The litter box sits in the corner of my dining room and I have had people come into my house who did not know I had a cat. When Tillie slithers up to them, they ask me if she's an indoor/outdoor cat. When I tell them she's strictly indoors, they are amazed that there is no smell.

If your cats urine is that strong, I might recommend having your vet check them out for a possible urinary problem. Most of the litters you named should be able to handle the typical cat urine odor with no problem.

Good luck!

Sue & Tillie

I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems with litter that's affecting your throat like that. Could you possibly be allergic to anything in the litter that is exasperated when it comes into contact with urine? I have 4 cats now and they use the unscented extra strength Ever Clean with no problems that we detect. Where do you keep the box? Have you talked to your vet for suggestions?

I wish I could help more. Please let us know if you find a solution.

Hi Oleander,

I have two female spayed cats as well, and I use Arm and Hammer litter. It's scoopable, and I don't have any problems with odor. I've got a bit of a hectic schedule, and there have been a few unfortunate occasions where I haven't gotten to the litter box to scoop it for three days, and if anything there is barely any smell. None of my roommates have ever complained about the smell, or even noticed any smell at all. Also, I've found if you use a better quality of cat food that can help reduce the smell in the litter box as the cats are digesting better foods. Hope this helps you!

I've been using "World's Best" clumping litter for some time now with my four and odor is not a problem. I highly recommend it. I am able to find it at Mackey's/Agway. Good Luck!
