We found out today that my middle ds is allergic to the cats, dog and hamsters. He was devastated to hear the doc say to get rid of them all. I told the doc that it would have to be life or death before we do that.

So dh and I have decided to finish building the bedroom downstairs for our ds and keep the door closed so the cats can't get in, and then replace our carpet with laminate and buy new furniture (probably leather). Hopefully this will help keep the symptoms down for him. He is also allergic to red top grass and aspen/poplar trees.

I am just really hoping that they don't get worse and that he outgrows them.

I hope all this works and so good you can do all of this as it will be spendy. They always adverdise a pill on the tv for pet allergies.( the funny one where the man has the girl with the cat and pretty soon the cat is with him everywhere!)

I've known people with allergies who live quite happily with their pets. You just have to be more diligent with the housekeeping! And as the others said, hepa filters really help.

My DBF had horrible allergies when he was a kid. You name it, he was allergic to it. He was never able to have any pets. Now that he is grown up, he just goes through a really bad spell for a couple of weeks avery spring, and the cat doesn't seem to bother him at all, ever.
