Misha's home from the vet's....

I wish my own vet had been in today, but there was a different one who fills in for her. They took a urine sample using a needle into her bladder (she cried so much she was in such pain) :-(

They said there were tons of red blood cells, also she had bacteria, some white blood cells, & protein present. This vet said it was Cystitis (though I am not sure of that since I looked up the symptoms and Misha does not strain to urinate, or just have drops. She urinates normally, but there is blood in the urine. The info I read said cats rarely have bacteria present with Cystitis. It also said cats with it have abnormal urinary Ph. Misha's was only 5.5 which is in the normal range. It said affected cats have crystals, which Misha did not. I am confused as to whether this is what she really has?) I am sure we're dealing with some sort of infection, though. I pray her kidneys aren't affected. They said they can't tell at this point. I will call my own vet once she's back tomorrow to see if she agrees with this vet's assessment. They gave her a shot of penecillin and Dexamethasone. The vet gave me 2 weeks worth of Clavamox to give her twice a day along with her wanting me to give her the liquid Prednisolone again to reduce inflamation and increase her drinking. (1 cc twice a day for 3 days, then 1cc once a day for the next 3 days, then 1 cc every other day for the remaining 8 days). She has gained weight again up to 7.1 lb and had a temp of 102. I told them I won't have her get any more immunizations until she's better. I will take her back in in 2 weeks to be re-checked unless something doesn't improve in the next couple days and she needs to be seen sooner.

I know she's going to hate getting 2 pills per day along with liquid medicine. She must think I'm out to torture her. The vet assistant said the Humane Society where I got her was putting lots of cats to sleep because they have too many. I was told they leave cats up for adoption until they are adopted. The vet tech said I saved Misha since she has been so sick they probably would have taken her off the adoption floor....and you can guess what would have happened. I get so emotional thinking of what could have been and I pray so hard she will fight these infections and be healthy & happy soon. She's my little angel.

Thank you for your continued positive thoughts & prayers & support.

((((Hugs))))

I agree that you need to talk to your regular vet. I'm concerned about her keeping fevers.

I adopted 2 kittens last year from a shelter. I paid the adoption fee for both of them and wanted the sister to one of them but couldn't spend any more money. I asked the shelter if I could have the third cat, even foster her, but they wouldn't give her up. I called back a couple of weeks later, the kitten and many others there had come down with a upper respir. infection, either died or were put to sleep. My two I adopted barely got out of there. I'm kind of mad that the shelter wouldn't give up the third kitty. Please let us know how things are going. My kitten I've written you and others about(abused at high school, sick 4-5 weeks)seems well except for an occasional sneeze. I still hold my breath when she sneezes or doesn't eat like a pig!!! You'll make it. Take care of yourself. donna

I do not know if dogs and cats are the same but a few years ago Dusty peed and it was all blood! It was a bladder inf. or cystitus. The meds cleared it up and that was it. He did not strain or seem in pain so I am thinking the best for Misha and will pray for her and hope your own vet returns to help you! Take care of that sweet angel!

Poooor Misha! That sweet little girl has had enough illness in her short little life to last 10 cats' lifetimes! I was lucky with Tasha, she didn't need to get the needle extraction because I was able to get a sample on my own. After she piddled on the floor, I used a turkey baster to suck a little bit up and put it in the container they gave me (needless to say, that turkey baster went straight in the trash - LOL!)

I wonder what would have happened to my Tasha if I hadn't have adopted her too. After we got her home we discovered that 1. she had urinary crystals, was peeing on the floor, and would need to be on a special preventative diet for the rest of her life, and 2. she had a nasty case of ringworm (which she is still trying to shake off). Plenty of people would have taken her straight back to the shelter. I wonder sometimes if it was why her previous owners gave her up.

Thank you Patrick for your continued support & prayers. Thank you also for the excellent suggestion about the liquid version of the medicine. I will call my vet tomorrow and talk to her to see if she agrees with this diagnosis and treatment, and ask about the liquid. I want to make this as easy for Misha as possible. Did you also have to give Sammy and Prednisolone for the inflammation? I still don't like giving that as it suppresses the immune system.

Did Sammy have to eat any special food? I read that sometimes dry food can exacerbate the problem, but I'm not sure if that's the case. I tried giving Misha a little canned food and she actually ate the gravy, but not the meat. LOL She still prefers her dry food.

It'll be a long two weeks, but hopefully she'll then be feeling much better. I will keep you posted.

Hugs to you & Misha & Sammy

Thank you Donna!

I'm really sorry to hear that that shelter wouldn't let you have the third kitten. How awful to find they'd just put them to sleep! That breaks my heart. Thank God you rescued the two you have now. I'm glad your formerly sick kitty is doing so much better!

I will talk to my regular vet hopefully tomorrow and see what she says. I'll keep you posted.

Hugs,

Suzy

Oh Leslie, I am so grateful for your continued support & prayers. I am so lucky I adopted her when I did. I hate to see her suffer but I am so willing and happy to help bring her back to health. She's is my baby and I just want her well again. You really made me feel more optimistic knowing that not having crystals hopefully means she'll recover quickly and not have to be in severe pain when she urinates.

((((Pink)))) Thank you for being so sweet & for continuing to pray for little Misha. It has been a hard month or two for her, hasn't it? The Humane Society never answered my e-mails & snail mail about my questions regarding what had happened to Misha's kittens during the spay operation. I have no idea how far along she was. They don't seem to care. She was only there one week, but she must have picked up these infections either during the stress of surgery, or just being there among so many other cats. I think she knows how lucky she is having all of you caring about & praying for her. I am hoping for a speedy recovery and I will be optimistic and believe this is the final hurdle before her new, healthy life can begin.

Hugs & Purrs,

Suzy & Misha
