Experience with kitty UTI/Cystitis ?

Morning everyone,

I am wondering for those of you who've had kitties with urinary infections, if your cat drank enough water to flush out the bladder, or did you need to take the cat to the vet's for injectable fluids? I am not sure if Misha is drinking enough. She prefers dry food which doesn't help.

Any advice is much appreciated! :-)

Good ? as I know dogs drink a lot more. Will she drink milk as Tiger likes that and the dry food should make her more thirsty! Take care and kisses to that girl,I wish I could meet her!

I know cats and milk/cream is such a cliche (like dogs and bones), but in reality most adult cats are lactose intolerant. I guess Tiger was one of the lucky ones that could handle it!

Suzy, I wouldn't try milk unless you know for sure it won't make her tummy upset (if she's had it before with no problem). You could try Cat Milk, which I think is basically a soy milk for cats that you can buy in any petstore. You could also try keeping her water as fresh and cold as possible (cats prefer cold water), and you could also try pouring a little water into her dry food. That's what I did with Tasha.

Extra water will help her to flush the infection faster.

When Rusty and Fuzzy had their UTIs I didn't have to take them to the vet for injectable fluids.

Just to add to this discussion... If a cat is eating canned food he/she won't need to drink very much as the canned food contains a high

Thanks Patrick,

The vet tech said that to me this morning, and I have tried giving Misha Science Diet canned food but she only licks the gravy and won't eat the meat. To my dismay, she then threw up today for the first time since I've had her. I feel awful. I don't know if it was caused by the canned food or by the medicine she's getting. I am so frustrated that the vet won't call back. I know she's busy, but I've been waiting for several hours.

I may try giving Misha some water in a syringe again if that's what it takes. It's going to be awful going to work tomorrow while I'm worried about her home alone.

Thanks again for the good advice....I think it would work if only she could keep it down.

Hugs,

Suzy

Hi Chris!

I put down a wee bit of milk yesterday but Patches beat her to it. LOL I will see if she'll drink it or maybe some broth. Misha thanks you for the kisses!

It would be great if we could have a Cats board meeting sometime. I love everyone's pets here just as if they were my own. We are such a good group....like an extended family :-)

Many hugs & kisses to Scooby

Thanks for the advice! :-) My Missy used to love milk. You are right, though, that many cats cannot tolerate it. I will not risk it just now with Misha since she just threw up today. I change her water several times a day to keep it fresh & cold....I wish she'd drink more, though.

I put a little water on her dry food last night & she did drink some of it, but then she ignored the food when it got mushy. She's a finicky gal! LOL

Hugs to Tasha for me!

Thank you Leslie! That was very helpful :-) Misha started vomiting today so I'm not sure what's wrong. Maybe the canned food didn't agree with her? (She mainly ate the gravy and not the beef). Rusty sounds funny like our Patches....she loves canned green beans or peas and the water in them. LOL I might try the tuna water and see how that goes.

I'll keep you posted :-) (Poor Thomie is so stressed. She & Misha got into some sort of fight yesterday. All dh heard was the cats high pitched yowling and them chasing each other. Neither appears to be hurt physically. Thomie won't come upstairs from the basement. She is acting strange. We carried her upstairs, but if she sees Misha she growls and hisses up a storm. I think she would have been more happy as an "only cat", but alas that's not an option. She barely tolerates the other cats as it is. I would only give her up to a family member if I knew they'd give her the attention she needs. In the meantime, we will try our best to nurture her and hope she'll calm down).

Talk to you soon!

Suzy, perhaps you may want to ask your vet about liquid glucosimine.
