I finally talked to Misha's vet....

It had been over 24 hours so I called the vet's again and just by chance she answered. She thought the vet tech had answered my questions, which she had not. She was about to go into surgery but I got a few minutes to ask her questions. She didn't seem to like me questioning the decisions of the other vet who saw Misha on Monday. I told her her symptoms didn't totally match the description of Cystitis on the web. She said it depends on what type she has whether she has a high ph or any crystals. She said I can continue giving her the Clavamox 2 x a day (even though she admitted she herself prefers to prescribe Baytril, which Misha had taken for her URI last month, and only had to take one pill per day). I told her Misha had thrown up yesterday and didn't seem to want to eat much since. She told me not to "hover" over Misha and just let her "be a cat" and she might eat more. (Maybe the vet was in a bad mood today?) I told her I was leaving her alone plenty of times and was not hovering. (Actually, Misha tends to eat more if I am there in the room with her. She follows me around a lot anyway). She said if she throws up again it's probably because Clavamox can upset her tummy. She said at that point she'd have me only give her one dose a day. (I told her giving her 2 pills a day plus the liquid Prednisolone has been very difficult). I questioned why I had to give her Prednisolone which suppresses the immune system. She said it was to reduce inflamation because of "spastic" urine dribbling. I said I had not observed Misha dribbling anything, and that she urinated normally in her box. (They must have misunderstood me on Monday?) She said if that's the case, I can discontinue giving the Prednisolone. (Yeah!!! She just spits some of it out the side of her mouth anyway). I hope I'm doing the right thing in badgering them about this drug. I just don't want to harm Misha's immune system, but at the same time I don't want to cause her inflammation. Did anyone's cat here who had bladder infections have to take Prednisolone?

I told the vet Thomie is in hiding in our basement from the stress of having a new cat in her environment. She suggested I give her 1/2 dropper of "Rescue Remedy" from a health store 2 times a day for a few days to naturally help calm her down. Has anyone here used that?

Dh just called & said she's not eating. I really think it's the Clavamox upsetting her stomach. I wish the vet would let me cut the dose to once a day, or just switch her back to Baytril since she ate just fine when taking that.

Any advice is most appreciated. Thanks for listening to my update. :-)

Hugs,

Suzy

I've actually heard of Rescue Remedy. Isin't it some kind of flower essence blend or something? I think that both humans and pets can use it. It is supposed to be very good for stress and anxiety. I've read on another message board about people who claim it is the best thing ever made, for themselves and their pets. Others haven't noticed a difference.

Give Misha some cuddles for me!

I will have to stop by a health store and find some. It's worth a try, right? :-)

I will let you know how it works. I've tried also spraying Feliway around just in case it helps.

Misha will love the cuddles! >^..^<

Suzy, I think the Feliway will be very helpful.

Good to hear! I hope it works. I'll keep you posted. At least Boots is warming up a little to Misha. They napped together on the bed yesterday. I even took a picture for proof. LOL! Now if Patches would stop hissing, and poor Thomie would come out from hiding....

I forgot to mention when I spoke with the vet and told her I didn't like that they used a needle to get Misha's urine sample since she cried, the vet said she always does it that way because it's the only "sterile" sample they can get. If they let her do what comes naturally, she claimed that contamination could occur from their using the box, etc. Gee, I'm sure glad they don't force us humans to have a needle inserted. They seem to deem it acceptable to let us go in a cup for medical purposes. LOL

One of my cats was having chronic diarrhea and the vet put her on predisone. Said he would use it short term. My dog has also been on it. Think it works for various things. I've even been on it for hives. Your other cats will adjust. It takes some cats one day and others weeks. They may feel your stress. Your vet probally is tired (mentally)of trying to find out what Misha's sickness is. I'm sure its frustrating for everyone. I think we could all use the calming medicine/herb you are asking about!!! donna

When my Sammy had his urinalysis some time ago, the vet did the same thing.

Myabe you can call her back in the am and see if you can switch to the other meds and maybe she will be in a better mood! When Dusty was checked he did not have many crystals but I still insisted on something and then he was fine. When he had some times of really bad urinating on the floor I insisted again as I thought at his age it could not hurt and the vet said the amount of crystals to cause inf. can vary just like in people! Take care and will talk in the am!!

Hi Suzy. I would say if poor Thomie is that stressed out, I would give her the Rescue Remedy and use the Feliway too.

Evening Leslie! I bought some of the Rescue Remedy tonight. Dh helped open Thomie's mouth & I gave her 1/2 dropper full. She seems better already. She's here upstairs very calmly resting a few feet from us. She didn't hiss or anything when Misha came in the room. (Of course both Patches & Boots did...LOL) I wonder why there is 27% alcohol in it, though? Maybe she's drunk? LOL

I talked to the vet tech late this afternoon and told her Misha had not been eating much since starting the pills. I asked her to check with the vet about whether I should switch to Baytril, or just reduce the dosage from 2 pills a day to just 1 a day. She called me back and said I can just give her one Clavamox pill a day. I hope that's enough to still kill the bad bacteria. I was happy not to give Misha a second pill tonight (and of course she's happy to only have one pill in the morning and no more prednisone). She started eating a bit again tonight. That made me feel better.

Fuzzy must've been lucky to be allowed to give a sample the natural way ;-) I guess every vet has a different way of doing things?

Just a short while ago I found both Misha & Patches sleeping within a foot or so of each other on the top of the sofa! I love seeing things calm down!

I'm off to bed soon. Thanks again for the feedback. (BTW....How's Trouble doing?)

(((Hugs)))
