Well I guess you could try to bury some chicken wire just under the surface and then cover with bark (it is alot of work to replant the bed, but worth it). The cats wont like to dig in it anymore.

I have no idea as I have never had a outdoor cat but I know I had trouble with the neighbors in our sand box,we have a fenced yard so had to keep the gate closed!

I had the same problem one time our beds were dirt. I used moth balls, they are inexpensive. They worked!!! I left them done for one summer/and winter. The only thing is moth balls stink!!! Maybe you could try to put some where you know they are doing their business and see what happens. I bet at this point you are willing to try anything, I know I was. Good luck

ps I was told by a friend that if you put moth balls down it will get rid of some bugs like spiders.

This wil sound weird, but at places like farm supply stores (maybe also pet supply stores) you can buy the urine (I don't know in what form) of various animals. A different animal's urine works on different species. I forget which I heard works on cats.

Also, I was in a plant nursery the other day & saw a plant that is supposed to keep cats away! The name was something silly like Cat Away.

Good luck.
