Hi there!

I haven't been on the board in ages, but I have some good news to share....I am adopting a third kitten this weekend! I have two females, Precious and Natalie, and I am adopting a male that I am going to name Oscar....he and his brother were left abandoned on a friend's doorstep over the weekend, and she took them in, but cannot keep both, so we made a deal...she will keep one and I will take the other....I have done the cat introductions before, but in this case, I haven't had a male, so any suggestions for me? Precious is about 20 months and Natalie is close to 4...the kitten cannot be very old, but there is no way to tell...any ideas before I pick him up and bring him home? Also, when should he be taken in to the vet to be fixed? My other two were already fixed when I adopted them....

Thanks in advance!!

Hi! What a nice person you are to take in a little orphan! In my experience, introductions will go the way they go. However your 4 y/o acted with your 20 mo. when you brought her home should be the same way she acts with the boy if he's young. He will be no threat since he is so small.

IMO I would wait to neuter the kitten until he is 6 mo. Your vet should be able to tell you the appoximate age of you kitten also. So just ask when you take him in for his initial check up. He'll need shots, wormed, etc. so I would just ask the vet.

Hope this helps and good luck with your new addition!

Thanks for the advice! He is a little calico, brown and a little bit of gray and he's such a cutie....he is quite thin at this point, probably hadn't had a good meal in awhile until my friend took him in, but he is sooo cute...I hate to separate the brothers, but its the only choice to keep them both in good homes....I would guess that he might be about 3 pounds right now, very bony, but he's adorable....

As for my other cats, actually Precious, my first cat, was adopted at 6 months, then Natalie was adopted when she was 3, and Precious has always been the leader, so she is the one that I am more concerned about...but hopefully she'll adjust. Should I still keep Oscar in his own room for a little while?

I would and at least have some time to watch them for awhile and see how it goes

I think calicos are females. The only thing I would possibly test the kitty about would be leukemia. This can kill the other cats. I use to never test for it, then a stray came in the yard, popped one of my feral cats on the nose, a month later he died from leukemia and several of my other cats within 2 yrs. also died from it. Its great you are opening your heart and home to the homeless kitten. They are so sweet. donna
