Now that we have the new kittens I can say that I see some big differences between male and female cats. Since I always had male cats (^Itchy^, Hamlet and Leo) and Donna female (^<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Bob^, ^Tootsie^, ^Electra^, Calliope) the behavior differences I noted between my boys and ^Electra^ and Calliope was in my mind attributed to the fact that ^Electra^ and Calliope were brought up together and learned many of the same habits, just as ^Itchy^ learned from Hamlet. Since we got Orion September of ’03 (male 4 week old) and now Apollo (male kitten) and his sister Andromeda (female – duh), I am seeing the same habits and differences in behavior I say with our older cats.

Hi David,
I've seen such a variety of male and female behavior that seems to have nothing to do with gender. Right now I have Phoebe who is 5, Clio who is 3.5 and Casper who is approx. 5. Phoebe and Clio are females, each adopted at 6 months of age, and Casper a male I adopted about a year ago. I'll take it point by point:
1) Phoebe, a female, is the only one really aggressive about food and tries to take both Casper's and Clio's food and snacks. She is a more versatile eater; they are a bit more fussy. Also, I think she feels she is the senior cat and is entitled to do what she wants.
2) Only Clio seems to wildly dig in the litterbox and she is a female. She is a tortoiseshell, and they are known for being feisty, which she is.
3) All three of my cats are cuddly and affectionate. Phoebe has been here the longest and could spend 90% of her time in my lap. I've had female cats before who were major lap cats.
4) I don't notice a difference in eating rates.
5) All three of my cats are very graceful (not to mention attractive, intelligent, wonderful personalities, etc)
6) All three are roughly the same size and not too different as far as walking on me.
I have heard males tend to be mellower, in general, and I have observed this with Casper. He is a mellow guy and Phoebe and Clio are more high strung and particular. Casper is also exceptionally well mannered and Phoebe and Clio love to get into mischief, but I think that might just be their personalities, not gender.
