Need advice about plane travel and move

My boyfriend and I are moving from Michigan to California in January. We have two cats that we're taking with us of course. Ally is about three and is pretty easy going, she hates being in a carrier though and will cry the entire time. Neo is a little over one and is scared of anything out of his comfort zone. Strangers cause him to run into the nearest dark spot and hide until they are no longer around. He's not fond of carriers either.

Anyway - neither of them have ever flown before and I'm worried about how they're going to react to this, mainly Neo. I've read that sedating isn't the best idea - I know I have to get all their records up to date before the move, good idea anyway because we'll be looking for a new vet when we get there. When we do get to California we'll be in a hotel for a few days (hopefully just a few) while we find a place to live. I'm worried that this might be too much change and trama for my babies.

Am I over reacting? Has anyone else gone through this and have tips? Any and all would be wonderful. Thanks in advance!
