Getting into food....

Hi,

My cat Sweetpea that we adopted about a month ago is getting into food on the kitchen counter. I caught her last night tearing up the doughnut box and this AM the box was left open and she was eating a doughnut! She will also try stealing my 3 year olds food if she leaves it sitting on the coffee table. I did not even know cats liked human food! How do I break her of this?

Right now I just shoo her and tell her no that is bad. I do not want to be 'mean' because we are still bonding. Any advice would be wonderful.

Thanks,

Heidi

We've had one of our kittens for a few months now and he still does this. Best thing for parents of cats who get on the counters is to keep all food (even dessert boxes) off the counter if you aren't there to supervise. Also, make sure your sink is clear of dirty dishes as they will get into those as well. You may even need to be sure your trash can has a lid if it is easily accessable. If you aren't in the kitchen, don't leave "kitty snacks" out. :) They will surely get into it. Also remember that chocolate, onions/onion powder, and certain houseplants are toxic to kitties!

Thanks all for the advice. Think I will try the coins trick. I am affraid if my 3 year old sees me squirt Sweetpea with a water bottle she will never leave her alone! LOL I know we used to train a dog I had with a news paper and all we had to do was pick up a peice of paper and she was gone, lol So, will show how the can and coin trick works!

Thanks!
