Kitten licking wound raw...what to do??

What we thought was ringworm on Binx (bald patches, lesions) turned out to just be battle wounds from wrestling around with Skeeter. The vet told us to keep an eye on the spots and to use Animax topical ointment on the wounds. This is the same ointment he gave us when we first adopted Binx from the shelter to treat a bunch of flea bites, so we know it works well.
The problem is that Binx keeps licking one of the spots on his front right leg. He's licked it so much that it's raw and bleeding now and there is a bit more hair missing. He also keeps licking off the Animax, so it can't do it's job.
Is there anything I can do?? Maybe wrap gauze around it or something?? I just want these cuts to heal so they don't get infected!
I just spoke to the vet and he said that we may have to bring Binx in to inject some cortizone, but I don't want it to come to that. What can I do at home to help?

I don't know why vets sell ointment to put on cat's wounds. They always lick it off.
