Does anyone here have experience w/allergy shots for cat allergies? DO THEY WORK? I need to find out. My husband is allergic to our cat. We both desperately want to keep our cat. But he has developed from his allergies, blocked air passage. He has some difficulty breathing, occasionally. He hasn't looked into getting shots yet. He said he doesn't think the shots would even work, so he may not take them.

Thanks for the advice. We already do keep the cat out of the bedroom. My husband has been dragging his feet on getting those shots. He went to a regular M.D. (not an allergy specialist) and was lectured that he needed to "get rid of the cat ASAP". The doctor gave him a stern lecture and just kept repeating over & over "get rid of the cat". It made us both feel bad. We don't have another home for the cat right now that we could take him too. I would only give him to someone who would promise to keep him indoors, someone I knew well and trusted. No way am I just taking our baby to some shelter and dumping him. This doctor also told my husband that allergy shots 'would probably not work'.

You won't know how the shots work unless you take them. I wouldn't listen to the doctor who said get rid of the cat/shot doesn't work. One poster here takes zrytec? for her allergies.

He is supposed to get those shots soon.

His trouble breathing is the scary part. His friends and relatives are concerned about him and blame ME for having a cat, and insinuate I am putting my cat ahead of my husband. What they do not and refuse to realize is that the decision to get a cat was mutual - in fact it was more my husband's decision than mine. But still, his friends/family make me feel guilty. Like I should just immediately dump the cat off at the nearest street corner. I mean, really. I would never do that. I offered to give our cat to my parents - my husband said "no". So, here we are.

Does your husband only have the problems when the cat is there or did he have them before the cat? I know you both sound determined to try and find a solution, hopefully medicine to help your husband be able to co-exist with the cat. I know the relatives probally mean well, but it is you and your husbands decision on how to handle everything. Good luck.

It sounds like he has asthmatic allergies to cats. Does he get bronchial build up - cough up mucous? I have asmathic allergies and it's the reason my cat is an outdoor cat and lives with my dad. I can be around her for the most part. But after a while, the congestion breaks down and I have sinus problems. Coincidently, we found out I was allergic to cats after I had an asthma attack and had to be rushed to the hospital when I was 4. I haven't had one since, but I cannot be around my cat when she's shedding in the summer and I can't really be in houses where they have indoor cat(s). I have never tried the allergy shots, but am interested to see how they work for your husband.
