Feeding Two Cats

I have 2 indoor tabbie male cats. One is 7 months old and the other is 5 years old. I feed both cats California Natural catfood - which the vet said is okay to feed the younger male. However, my vet said both cats need to slim down and I should reduce slowly the amount of food I feed both cats. Previously, I had another adult female tabbie who passed away - both her and the older male I would put one bowl of food out for the day.
Now with the younger kitty - I have been putting less food out per my vets guidelines, but he rushes the food bowl and seems to eat frequently while the older cat hangs back. I'm concerned my older cat isn't eating enough and the younger is still overeating.
Any ideas on how to feed the two cats so both gets the appropiate amount of food? I tried separating the two and feeding the younger in a room by himself. However, I catch him in the day eating out of the older cats bowl.
Not sure what to do...
Thanks!

Hi Matrix898.
Thanks for the tip - I think I can manage that feeding solution around my work schedule. I kept reading feed them several small meals a day - and how do i do that from work and keep the food bowls separate. I think this idea will get us off to a good start!
Thanks again!
