Collar issues...

When buying a regular collar (not a breakaway one), how snuggly is it supposed to fit? I bought Amber a breakaway collar last spring and she lost it this fall. Then I bought her regular one and, by November, she lost that one too. Apparently, she's getting caught on stuff when she roams and this is how she keeps losing her collars. If I buy her regular one, I don't want her to be unable to free herself if she gets caught on something and I don't really want to buy a breakaway one as apparently she'll just lose it. GRR. I really need to move so I don't have to deal with this stuff. lol

I know I keep posting about trivial things, but my family tends to brush me off. Plus, when Amber moves in with me, she'll be my sole responsibility and I've never really took care of a pet completely on my own if that makes sense. Growing up, my parents were always around to make decisions like when they need to go to the vet, etc. Now, all that will be on me.

I highly suggest the breakaway collars - even if they have to be replaced often.

Stick w/the breakaway collar. They aren't that expensive. Better to hav to keep replacing them, than Amber getting stuck. Moxie has lost hers before, too. It also means replacing the ID tag, but that's OK.

Breakaways are best. Also the things you post about are very interesting and help us. Go with your gut instinct on decisions for your cat. You are very smart and you can do it. Donna

Breakaway Collars are the best because if they get caught then they wont choke as Leslie said .. They are also good attention getters too .. If little boy does not get enough he takes his collar off ... His also comes with a bell and it freaks me out a bit because then I always know where he is when he has it on ..

Also you want the collar to be loose enough around their neck that you can slide your finger easily in and out of it .. because if you cant it is to tight

Have you thought about getting her microchipped or tattooed? Then you won't have to worry about the collar at all. My cats don't wear collars. They are mostly indoor cats and when I let them out they stay in the yard so I have never felt the need to collar, 'chip, or tattoo them so far. Iri

I would agree with the breakaway since we had a bad experience with a regular which luckily didn't cause any serious issues just really guilty furparents.

I got Amber a breakaway color the other day. It's not the most flattering color for her. It's NEON yellow, red, and pink but it was the only breakaway collar available at KMart. LOL I guess everyone'll be able to see her now. I had to take the bell off cause she really doesn't like bells but that's nothing new.

They say to beable to put two fingers in. I would use the breakaway! I do not use them as indoor cats and have a gate byt the door so they cannot get out!

I made sure I could fit two fingers through the collar when I put it on her. My poor Amber. I think she was really quite happy to be without a collar for a couple of weeks. LOL But she accepts me putting one on her, so it's not difficult or anything. It's more difficult putting a new collar on my dog cause she wants to be petted and moves around. LOL
