and condos, etc. so stinking expensive? They're just rope or carpeted cover plyboard attached to a post. Good grief. Sorry, I just have to rant a little. Since I'm cutting down on a lot of what I had picked out thanks to you all, a scratching post/condo type thing is going to be the most expensive product for me to purchase. As Amber likes to sit up in trees, I think it would be best for me to get something that allow her to "perch" somewhere but they're soooo expensive. *sigh* Man, Amber's going to be so freaking spoiled when she moves in with me.

Funny story - my dad doesn't like Amber to be in the house or in the garage for a long time. He just doesn't believe that pets need to come indoors so feeding her in the garage has always been a sore point, but she has to be fed in the garage otherwise my dog will eat her food. (That typical pets acting like little kids type of thing.) I went out to my dad's yesterday for pretty much the whole day. Amber got to come inside for the whole time I was out there until about 4:30 when my dad came home from work. Then she stayed in the garage. Now mind you, my dad lets her in to eat and then puts her back outside. Well, last night you could have knocked me down with a feather. Before I left, I told him that I had made Amber go back outside and he actually told me to let her back in the garage. He let her stay in the garage overnight. He NEVER does that, much less tells ME to let her back in. ROFL It was a little shocking. He's not mean to Amber or anything, but it's not like he snuggles with her either. But in his way, he really is attached to Amber. lol Just thought I'd share.

I've posted this before, maybe even to you, petsplus has sales on their cat trees alot. I bought a $198. for $138. It is wonderful. I always have a couple of cats on it. It has four curved shelves, nice to sleep on, go up like a spiral staircase. On one sisal rope post and 3 cedar posts the cats claw alot. The tunnel near the floor has a cutout window. It is taller than I am. Best $$$ I've ever spent on the cats. You can find them on sale. Check out fostersmith.com petco.com and petsmart.com. Donna

I've checked out the websites you two have listed and they have similar pricing. I'm thinking that maybe I'll have my dad make one. lol It shouldn't be too hard. And I think I'll just wait until I bring Amber to live with me before I buy some monstrous cat condo. She might be perfectly happy without a perching area.

I'm sure someone can build one. You can get remmant pieces of carpet pretty cheap. The cedar posts are great. My husband could build one but I didn't want to wait on him, when I found mine on sale I went for it! I have a small cat tree that has the cathouse on top. The kitties like to sit in it, on top of the house and on the lower ledge and look out the window. It is carpeted. It was about $55. looks similiar to some on the web sites you've been on. As far as the one foot tall scratching posts, mine like to use theirs with it laying on its side, like its been knocked over, they are on it kinda like being on a log. Donna

Have you looked on ebay? I was looking for one for Asher and I noticed that at all the stores I went to they were all over $100 and most of them were closer to $200! I couldn't believe how expensive they were! I went on ebay and found one for Asher and got it for $50 total. It's only 52" tall but it has 3 levels and a condo area for him to hide in. It also has sisal rope on the posts. Of course, Asher doesn't use it so I am going to sell it on ebay. But you should look there. You can really get a good deal on one! Or, like you said, you could have your dad build one. I wouldn't think it would be too terribly hard, especially if he is the handyman type! LOL. My SO and I built Asher his scratching post ourselves. It was fairly easy to do and didn't cost very much either. Anyway, good luck in finding what you are looking for!
