Was combing the kitties this am and also trimming around their butt as I am tired of trying to clean poop off their fur as they have very long fur. well maggie sat there just like a angel and Elvis of course scratched and fought me! He even turned around and hissed at me with all fangs showing and I was real scared for a minute that he was going to bite me. I do not want to be afraid of him so now waht!!?? My Tiger was combed every day and trimmed and never once hissed or scratched at me!! Elvis is 6 months old only and I want to beable to "handle" him!!

Poor little Elvis. You'll have to try breaking his sessions down to shorter intervals. Get him used to being handled that way, but don't give him long enough to get upset. Give him a treat after each session. Try only 2 minutes a day at first, and gradually increase the time. Whatever you do, try not to think about him swatting or hissing, because that may make you apprehensive or nervous, and he will sense that for sure!
Tasha LOVES to be combed, but she can only take so much. Once her body language changes (her "cuddling the comb" motions start getting a little jerky, and she starts pulling away a litte), I know she is done and I let her go.

LOL Chirs, me too.
Hi Chris,
Yes, I would like to have someone comb my hair, too! When I take my cats to the vet Dr. Julie and her assistant always spend time petting them and complimenting them. My doctor never does that!
As far as grooming, I don't know if you have Anitra Frazier's "The Natural Cat" which talks about everything concerning cats: their emotions and behaviour, health and nutrition, etc. Well, there is an excellent chapter on grooming that taught me quite a bit. For instance, with long haired cats you use a comb, not a brush and it should be a medium wide or wide toothed comb so it doesn't pull. She also explains how you place your hand on the part of the furs close to the body and comb the ends. In a sense you are holding the fur so you don't pull, which really upsets the cats. She also recommends you start by petting the cat all over before grooming, to calm them and to see if there are any mats and tangles. I'd highly recommend the book; she explains much better than I do. But it does take time to get some cats used to grooming and you may have to only do a bit at at time at first.
