Inappropriate elimination questions.

I am going through huge stressful cat-peeing problems with my two boys. I used to go on TLAC with Pam all the time, but she seems to be gone!!

My kitties have been peeing on things they shouldn't be. I have taken them to the vet to get checked for UTI's and they are both healthy. They are both doing this, and after doing some research, it seems that it is a behavioral issue. They like to pee on things left on the floor such as towels or clothes. They like to pee on rugs. They like to pee on bean bag chairs, and they like to pee on those fuzzy cat beds.

Reasons could be that we (the two boys and I) just moved to a new house 3 months ago. I have a roommate now who has a cat and her parents have a dog. So there are a total of 3 cats, and a dog in the house. It is a split-level house and my roommate and I are downstairs, and her parents and the dog stay upstairs. The kitties have full reign so they go back and forth. All three kitties seem to get along fine, as my boys are very laid back and get along with just about anyone or anything. Her kitty is a little testy and every once in a while will swat at one of my boys if he doesn't feel like playing, but in general, they're all very peaceful. Someone is always home so the boys get plenty of attention. I'm not home as much as I'd like to be, about 3-4 nights a week, since my boyfriend and I are back and forth a lot between each other's houses.

We have 2 litterboxes. One in my room, and one in the laundry room. All the things they pee on are only downstairs. They started on things on my couch in my room, so I started keeping clothes off of there, and put their food dish there and they stopped. Now, they'll do it in my towel laundry basket, even though their litterbox is just 5 feet away! Both litterboxes are large and uncovered with clumping litter. A side note: both kitties still use the litterboxes regularly. If I leave so much as a sock on the floor, they'll pee on it. They've peed on several of my roommate's sweatshirts on the floor in her room. Her cat does not pee outside of the litterbox and does NOT use the litterbox in my room.

I've been doing some research and heard that I can wash my clothes and towels in lemon-scented detergent, and that should deter the boys from peeing on them. Is that true? Also, I've used Feliway and enzyme cleaners, but nothing seems to deter them!! We need to fix this problem, as my roommate is starting to freak out about the situation. What's worse is that her cat is sick so he likes to sleep on the floor, so she set towels and a blanket on the floor next to her bed, and one of the boys peed on it.

Any suggestions??

For now, I've locked the boys up in my room with food, water and their litterbox and will only let them out when supervised. I have nothing on the floor for them to pee on.

Thanks!!
Mandi
