Question about Kitties

My girlfriend has a kitty that is part short-haried and part long-haired. Anyway, the kitty keeps on getting her hair knotted up. Does anyone know the reason for that? Why does it keep on knotting up on her? She grooms her kitty, but within a couple of weeks, it is knotting up again. Is there something that should be added to Kitty's diet or what? Thank you to all who respond.

Some cats just get matted - it can be a lack of the cat grooming herself, the type of coat she has, etc.

I have a friend who has 3 long-haired cats whom she brushes daily. 2 never mat, and one always mats. She's never found a way around it. She's just resorted to cutting the mats off before they get to bad. I think some cats just have the kind of fur that mats.

For some reason, I suspect it's the type of fur some kitties just mat more than others. I have two longhaired cats right now and have learned over the years that the only real way to avoid the mats it to try and keep ahead of them. I brush and/or comb daily and if I'm super busy at work the minimum I do it weekly. I can only do weekly though because right now my two little boys are not "matters". If they were I would have to figure a way to comb daily or at least every other day to stay on top of them.

Please be careful when cutting mats out as it's very easy to end up cutting your kitty. You can get a plastic mat splitter at Petsmart which helps a bit in getting them out without the risk of scissors and cutting the cat.

Good luck, Lynn

Your friend will have to brush her kitty every day to avoid mats.
