Bad Annie is at it again

I have to share. I was complaining a few weeks ago, that Bad Annie has discovered a way to get onto my kitchen counter, and I'm trying to teah her not to go there. I've got newspaper all over the pass-through that she's using as her way up.

So I walk out of my computer room 5 min ago, to get some lunch, and there is Bad Annie, curled up on the newspaper, all comfy. She looked at me like "Hi Mom!" I can't win!

Noelle,

Have you tried the plastic placemats with the Sticky Paws tape solution yet? If you haven't you really need to.

Cats love newspaper so that's not going to keep her off. Haven't you ever noticed that if you sit on the floor with the paper spread in front of you reading the one place they want to be is on the newspaper?

Seriously, try the placemats/Sticky Paws and you'll get a lot further in training her to stay off the counters. Consistency is the key though.

Good luck, Lynn

I hadn't tried it yet, because I'd have to go to the store and remember to buy placemats and sticky paws. As yet, I haven't remembered.

The newspaper was my mom's idea. I've never actually noticed my cats sit on newspaper, because I never have any in the house. Since I moved out on my own, what 7 years ago, I never signed up to get a newspaper. I read the news online. I had to borrow newspaper from my parents to have some to put on the counter!

I admit, I'm concerned that if I do the placemats with sticky paws, that I'll come home from work to find Bad Annie laying in the livingroom with a huge placemat stuck to her. And then I'd have to cut it out of her fur. I don't want to have to cut her beautiful long fur. :(

Noelle,

You will not find Annie on the floor with the placemats stuck to her and you won't have to cut her fur. At the rate you're going though she may end up with newsprint in that beautiful white fur.

The tape isn't that sticky, it's not super glue! Sticky Paws is an excellent behavior modification tool for cats and wouldn't be sold so much if cat's were being harmed by it. The taped surface makes the surface unattractive to her so she will get down. This tip is straight from Pam Johnson Bennett from the TLAC board and it works like a charm!

Trust me, if you want to teach her to stay off the counters you really need to give it a try. However, you do have to be consistent when you start it and put the placemats on the counters every time your away(asleep or out) and don't be too quick to remove the mats. You need to keep them out there whenever you're not using the surface long enough for her to get the message. Once she gets the idea you can remove them and then just bring them back out whenever you need to reinforce the idea to her.

The choice is yours, but newspaper won't work as most cats love laying on newspapers or any paper for that matter. The minute I lay a newspaper, magazine or heck even computor paper on the floor in my office they are laying on it.

Good luck, Lynn

I just got back from Target, and they don't have any plastic placemats! What the heck?! I've gotten them there before. So I still have to scope out placemats. In the meantime, I'm going to check online for where I can get sticky paws.

I've been meaning to try the placemats, honest. Like I said, I kept forgetting to get the pieces-parts. I'm getting a new kitten, and all I need is for it to pick up Bad Annie's habits!

It's just a suggestion, but you might even want to try some place like Big Lots or Dollar General for plastic place mats. They might be a little more reasonable and Petsmart carries Sticky Paws as well as any number of online retailers. The thing about shopping online is sometimes the freight is almost the cost of the item which sucks.

Good luck, Lynn
