Building outdoor cat pen for indoor cats

I have 2 indoor cats, and one in particular just longs to go outside. He will tolerate about 10 minutes on a kitty leash until he starts getting frantic (because of the leash and that he can't get away from it) and I have to take him back inside. I live near a busy road and just am not ready to make them "outdoor cats." I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience building an outdoor kitty pen/kennel for their indoor cats. I'd love to have somewhere in the yard I could let them roam around, but have them still enclosed. They are climbers, so I think i'd need some sort of mesh roof so they couldn't escape, but it would still let light in (to keep the grass growing). Or if anyone has had luck using a dog kennel.... just any information would be great!!!! thanks!!!!

Leslie, thanks so much for all the info!!!! The picture of your cat funhouse looks more elaborate than what I would come up with, but gave me some great ideas.
I absolutely agree that cats are not safe as outdoor roaming cats (unless MAYBE you live way out on a farm or something, but still). I'm sure many people know that awful feeling you get when your cat squeezes out past you when you open the door. Yikes. Luckily my kitties are so distractable all it takes is a little piece of grass to wave at them or "something shiny" ("oo what's that?" :) ) for them to slow down so I can pick them up.

Hi. I have inside only and cats that go in and out. We are planning on building an enclosure for ours this summer. Here is a great website with 8-10 pictures of different enclosures. just4cats.com Some use chicken wire, others dog fencing. I know the dog fencing at Lowes is cheap. Donna
