Does anyone know of a poem by A.L. Rowse (the initials stand for Alfred Leslie) that includes the following lines:
No more frisking as of old,
Or chasing his shadow over the lawn,
But a dignified old person, tickling
His nose against twig or flower in the border,
Until evening falls and bed-time's in order......
My cat and I grow old together.
I don't know if that's the entire poem, or just part of it. I don't know the title, either. I do know that Rowse was a poet and historian who was an authority on Shakespeare and the Elizabethan Age. I tried searching on book-sellers' sites with no luck. I also tried "Googling" it, but without success. I would love to learn the name of the poem, the entire text, and the book (perhaps collection of poems?) that it is in. Thanks for any info!

Hi Syl.
Hi SYl-
I did a little searching on a poem database provided by my library and came up with this:
Title THE WHITE CAT OF TRENARREN
Timeline 20th Century A.D.
First Line HE WAS A MIGHTY HUNTER IN HIS YOUTH
Last Line MY CAT AND I GROW OLD TOGETHER
Reference THE OXFORD BOOK OF TWENTIETH-CENTURY ENGLISH VERSE. - PAGE 351 - LARKIN, PHILIP (ED.)
Reference THE POETICAL CAT. - PAGE 112 - BAST, FELICITY (ED.)
You might try calling your local library and asking if they have the two books mentioned here. Those probably have the entire poem. If your library does not own the book, you can ask them to get it for you via interlibrary loan.
Good luck!

Eureka! That sounds like it! Thanks so much! I was contemplating spending several hours at bookstores trying to track it down. Rowse has many poetry collections listed on Amazon etal, but none of the book titles give any indication of which one it might be in (ie, no titles like "Cat Poems" to make it easy.)
Thanks again for everyone's help. I really appreciate it.
