Fur-Mommy Guilt

I took my baby to the vet this morning to have her bathed and groomed and to also have her urine checked (follow-up thing). I know she needed to go and I have been putting it off but she didn't want to go and I feel so bad for taking her anyway! She tried to "talk" me out of putting her in her kennel and I finally had to bribe her in with caviar treats. Then she growled at me when I closed the kennel door and that just broke my heart because I KNOW she wasn't growling to be mean but only because she was scared. And then I worry that the people at the vet won't be as gentle and caring with her as I would be and that bothers me too.

Do any of you feel this bad for routine stuff or am I going overboard? I feel like a bad mommy!

Yes, I feel huge guilt whenever I have to take my girls to the vet. It's such an ordeal. I bought top-loading carriers, to make it a little less traumatic. At least we don't have to have huge fights getting in and out of the carrier.

She'll be fine. You'll see.

I can feel bad, it really depends on a lot. If my cat (whoever is going for the vet visit) is ill, I would feel far more guilt if I did not take them, so that washes my taking guilt away. After all if your child had a something wrong and told you they hated going to the doctor, would you feel bad and then say “that’s okay honey, no need to really go and have the _____ removed/fixed/checked. Your feeling comfortable is more important than your health.”? Of course not.

I was told to call about my baby this morning about 11:30 so I did just call to check in on her and to make sure that I would be able to pick her up at 1:00 like I told them earlier was my preference. Firstly, the lady on the phone was snippy with me and when I asked how my baby was doing, she was very short and acted like I was crazy to ask that. Why wouldn't I have asked that? Isn't that partly what I called for? Then they told me that it would be around 4:00 this afternoon before I could get her so basically she will have to stay there stressed out all day long. And to make matters even worse, it seems that they haven't done ANYTHING with her, had her sitting there all day in her kennel just sitting. They haven't started her bath, examined her or taken her urine sample! What are they doing over there!?!? I'm terribly distraught over this!

This happens to me sometimes. You have to remember that many people may be going to the vet and leaving their pets. If a surgery is taking longer than expected it slows things up. If they get emergencies brought in, it slows things up….

I don't think they were doing it with a needle. They told me that they were "waiting" for her urine sample and indicated several times that they waited for her to go naturally. So, I'm not really worried about that.

As for using the carrier only for vet visits... I sometimes take her on weekends with me and have to have her in the kennel and buckled in. Should I get two carriers - one for vet and one for leisure weekends?

I know I'm over-reacting about her being there and I know she can't tell time (thanks for reminding me of that! :)) but I still worry. I love her so much and want her to be comfortable as much as possible and it is just natural to worry about her, I think.

Thanks for the support!

I do not think you need 2 carriers.

And as for worring, it is natural. If you did not care about here you would not have her. ;)

Well, I should have listened to her this morning...

The vet just called and said that my baby was really acting up and lashing out at the technicians and that they didn't think it would be good to give her a bath right now. They said that she acted very stressed and maybe even like she didn't feel very good and they asked me to come get her. They acknowledged that this isn't like her at all; that she is usually so good-natured and easy-going.

I feel so bad about this because she TOLD me that she didn't want to go, actively resisted going into her kennel and even growled at me which she NEVER does. I should have listened but I was so gung-ho for her to have a bath. Now she has gone through all this unneccessary stress because I forced her to go. The guilt continues...

I can't wait to have her HOME!
