Furbaby NOT happy with me

The verdict of the vet visit yesterday was that my baby has a kidney infection. They said that it is probably making her feel really poorly and making her iritable also. They gave me some special food to give her and some antibiotics that she has to have twice a day for seven days.

That part is where the trouble starts....

The antibiotic is banana flavored which is completely BEYOND me. WHY, WHY, WHY would they make a CAT'S medicine BANANA flavored??? She hates it. That is an understatement and she makes herself gag whenever I give it to her. She spits and foams and tries to get it back up and I know that isn't good for her either. But, I also know that I need to give her the antibiotic like her doctor said. Ack! But I HATE for her to be ill with me and think I'm being mean to her. I'm NOT being mean, I'm just trying to help her. She is currently in the window and won't have anything to do with me.

HELP!

Someone told me to try and quick cover their nose when you give it as it will make her swallow or find something she likes to eat and put it on that

The banana flavored antibiotic is probably a pediatric version. I just went through a two week course of bubble gum flavored amoxicillin for my kitten. The worst part of that was that it's bright pink. There are a number of bright pink spots in my house and on my clothes that weren't there before.

You might be able to get your cat to take it if it is mixed in a favorite food. Of all the things I tried with the amoxicillin, that worked best. Also it may be available in pill form. My vet has a neat looking little plastic gadget they use for giving cats pills. I haven't tried it yet. They also sell treats that have a pocket to hide the pill in. That sounds like a great idea but again I haven't tried it. Grinding up the pill and putting it in food works well for the other medicines I've been giving. I'm doing syringe feedings so I can be sure it gets eaten. In the past, I've taken pills to a compounding pharmacy and had them put in a chicken-flavor base that my cat liked.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I am going to forge along with the liquid as I really don't have the extra money to get the pills too. I think I'm going to go get some really yummy (to her) wet food which I normally don't get for her. I will mix a bit of the medicine with that and cross my fingers. Thanks again! Good suggestion!

When I had to give my cat some interferon I mixed it in with some Condensed Milk and she then took her medicine willingly. I just mixed it together in a small dish. Maybe this is worth a try?

JMO, but cats typically are very good at telling when there is something in their food that they don't like or shouldn't be there and they usually won't eat. At least I've never had a cat that would. A kidney infection is certainly nothing to mess with and if I were in your situation I would continue on with giving it to her orally as you have more control on whether or not she's getting the full dose.

If that doesn't work then I would ask for the antibiotic in pill form and ask your vet for a "piller". That's the plastic syringe like device that helps administer pills to animals. Make sure that you ask him for a demonstration on how to use it so you feel comfortable with it.

For future reference, if your cat is hard to medicate you can always ask the vet if their is a suitable med that can be compounded into a transdermal cream that you administer their skin. You can then rub that into her ear and medicate her that way. However, not all meds can be done this way so your vet will have to determine that.

I have one kitty that is really hard to medicate and the piller works best for us. I typically take him into the bathroom, shut the door and set him in the sink so he's up at a good level to medicate and he can't get away from me as easily.

No, he's usually not to happy with me either but it's for his own good and he gets over it in no time. Now he does catch on to the fact that he may be picked up and taken into the bathroom for a pill so for the time you're doing this you do have to be very non chalant about picking them up to give meds cause they will catch on to you quickly. Geez, it's like they have ESP!

Good luck, Lynn

My kitty vomited up ALL of her medicine last night. Apparently, she gagged until it came up. (Sorry, I know you could have done without that visual.) So, I called my vet this morning and he said to stop the antibiotic, just do the food and keep a close watch on her. So, that is what we are doing right now. She SEEMS fine so I'm hoping that she is better.
