Okay, this may seem a bit wacky or sick, but I am giving STRONG consideration to doing this….

I'm just wondering, could there be leagal ramifications if you posted that info? I don't know, I'm just thinking here. I mean, if I did something bad, there was an article in the paper, and someone posted my name and info on a website without my consent, I'd be contacting a lawyer to find out my legal rights.

Don't take this as my supporting people who are cruel to animals, because I don't. Personally, I place a higher value on animal life than human life, and I only give money to charities that support animals, not people. But I can't watch or read new articles on animal cruelty. I can't even watch those animal cops shows on Animal Planet. They just make me cry.

David,
I think it is a good idea. In fact, I remember reading an article in People magazine (no, I do not read it regularly, but sometimes someone leaves a copy in my building's recycling bin) a few months ago about a woman who did just that because she was so upset about a local case of animal abuse concerning a dog, if I remember. You are a great website developer, from what I can see, but it might be wise to work with her rather than duplicate efforts. People magazine was good publicity for her, but she obviously needs more. Her website (if it is a good one) could be linked and publicized with many other websites to make the information more widely available. And, very important, I would love to see links about what animal cruelty legislation is already in existance and what organizations are working to increase this.

This could be really big if it works. Just think people could google and find your site and we could put it on our personal sites!

My assumption is that IF the info is public by the law enforcement then it should be allowed to be reposted. If not what is to stoop me from making a link to the public info on the law enforcement site? So if you look up info on animal abuse in NYC the site could show a list of news stories (no names) and have a link also that takes you to the police sites where the info is, right to the page. Then I posted no accusing info what so ever. Just showed a news store and linked to the official police records and possible court records.

I'm not sure you can always post police/court records for individual cases on-line - and if you can, I'm not sure you can then post the names/address/contact info for those involved.

That being said - what's the qualifications to be posted to the site? Are hoarders whose animals are well taken care of to be on the list? Or those who don't take care of their animals? What about puppy mills? Is it for small animals only, or are you going to include horses/cattle/etc? If you include large animals, and thus livestock, are you going to allow info to be posted about feedlots? What about info on BSE in the US? That's all just from poor care, so IMO, it's a form of abuse. What about cases (such as little Ranky, who is perched on my lap right now) when there is at least SOME form of abuse, but it's unknown who caused it? And what is your sites idea of abuse - is it such as Ranky, dumping an eldery, deaf, blind and four paw declawed cat outside near a busy highway - or is it only for those cases like Teddi? If it's only Teddi's type - why is that form worse than what Ranky went thru - if I hadn't stopped, who is to say anyone would have and that he wouldn't have been HBC or any other things that can happen to a 100% defenseless cat? What about including PETA/ALF/HSUS/SPCA cases? I think they are abusive and pet killers, there are others who agree with me - but there are those who think that what work they do is good.

If it's legal, and all forms of abuse (this includes PETA and their cohorts) - I'll be willing to share informations. If it's illegal, no. If not all forms of abuse can be shared, no.

Linking to online public info would probably be better than reposting the articles on a site. There's also copyrites to consider with reposting articles. (Not sure about police reports.) Maybe you could research how other sites that post info like that deal with the legal aspects. Like, The Smoking Gun, they post police reports, etc. How do they cover themselves against litigation.

I just don't want you to have major problems, when you're just trying to do some good. :)

I agree that it would be difficult to draw a line on what you would allow and what not but I think this is a very worthy project that must be tackled. I also think that the atrocities of groups like PETA and my local humane society should be included. These groups that claim to love animals are sick and need to be singled out. It sickens me that these people hide behind a group name and do what they do to animals.

I stand heartily behind this site. Please let me know what I can do to help!
