I brought home a older cat that was living in a Kennel for 8 months at a vets office. I all ready have 2 other boys. Every thing seemed okay at first. One of my boys did a lot of hissing and the other one hid. Now they are having comfortations. It really seems like the new cat wants to make friends but the residents still won't except him now the new cat is fighting with my boys. It usually goes like this the new cat (General) will go up to Willie, Willie will hiss and then General gets pissy and bats at him. I have seen General chasing down Willie and getting in small cat fights. As I'm typing this Willie and General are facing off. General doesn't show aggression though I think he may just be annoyed with the hissing.
My husband told me if they don't get along General will have to go back. I really don't want him to live in that kennel hes a older cat and needs a family.
Could it be possible that they are still just getting to know each other? Some times when General isn't looking the other cats will carefully go up to him and sniff him. Is this normal for the fights? I know no one can predict if and when they will get along I'm just needing some help. I don't want to send General away. He all ready had a tough life. The original owners brought him in because he had a abscess instead of paying for it to be fixed they said Oh just put him to sleep he is old. He is like 10? but very very playful.

Can the introduction of a new cat take this long? Its been about 3 weeks or so.

Cat is right, three weeks is still too soon to give up. The fact that the other cats are walking up to him and sniffing him is a good sign. If they truly hated him, they would normally just stay away. If they wanted to initiate a fight (unlikely - cats usually don't fight for no reason), they wouldn't just sniff him and walk away.

It sounds like they are still duking it out and establishing themselves in the pecking order. It has been almost 2 months for Tasha and Bailey, and she still gets angry at him at least once or twice a day (more lately because we just moved and she is stressed). I would definitely give them some more time.

It took about 6 months for Fuzzy to get along with all my cats and for them to get used to him. He is an older cat and the rest of my cats are various ages.
