Curiosity Question

I smoked for a very short time in college. I stopped because I just didn't enjoy it, but after I stopped, it wasn't the actual nicotine that I missed, it was having the cigarette in my hand during the times I usually did (when I was driving, etc). It was the habit, more than the consumption. I would imagine that I will go through something similar to that post-op with not eating during the activities or times that I am used to eating something. Has anyone had a similar experience that they'd be willing to share? And/or some advice to offer?

I'd say whenever I'm watching TV (which is often, lol) I am usually eating. Now I just eat different foods (protein based snacks/foods). What is so hard to understand or even imagine before surgery is that you really won't WANT to eat afterwards for awhile. The length of time will vary from person to person (mine was much shorter than most) but some people for MONTHS don't ever feel like eating.

Yes, Melissa, I think TV time will be a big one.

Although I can eat a lot at a time, when I am full, I feel horrible and I hate the feeling, so I can imagine how that will feel with a little pouch. So I hope that lack of desire to eat will also "satisfy" the habit of eating.

I've read that there is a high incidence of food addictions transferring to other addictions (drug, alcohol) post-op. Do they discuss these things in the pre-op process?

Sorry if I'm asking a bunch of questions that will be answered in my information session.

Both of your responses are very reassuring to me. Since I know I mostly eat out of "habit" I was wondering if I would defeat the surgery by eating regardless of the size of my pouch, but it sounds like that is not the case.

I find myself closing my eyes and imagining what it will feel to be thin for the first time in many decades. I cannot wait! I am willing to put whatever work into it that it takes!

Okay, since you offered, another question... :)

Can I start losing the pre-op weight now, or should I wait until my first doctor's appointment so I get "credit" for it all? I know that seems silly, since there is never a reason NOT to lose weight, but I am more asking about what weight they will count as "starting" weight?

The way I look at it I have this window of the 1st 18 months to deal with all my poor eating habits and establish new ones.

My surgeon never discussed transfer addiction and I just don't know how high the rate is. I haven't had any personal experience with a transfer addiction and no one else here seems to have shared that they've had a new addiction.

My surgical group has told us that whatever weight you lose before surgery won't affect having the surgery. They use your weight from the first appointment that you have and submit that to insurance with your BMI from the initial appointment too.
