Hi my name is Victoria and I have been considering WLS for about two years now. I have considered all my options and along with my doctor, have decided the Gastric Sleeve is the best choice for me. My surgery date is June 28! I have very excited! I am 22 years old, 240 lbs. and 5'3''. Any of you sleevers, or any others that have any advice please post! TIA.

Wow that is awesome! Congratulations! I know I had my mine set on having the lapband but then my surgeon talked me out of it and into the sleeve. I am very lucky, my insurance covers the sleeve and only required a pysch evual. The only sucky parts that I have to deal with is 1) I have to be off my birth control for 30 days before and after surgery due to blood clots 2) Quit smoking 30 days pre-op(ulitimately a good thing) 3) pre-op full liquid diet. I knew I had to get off cigs and birth control but a pre- op diet! I am dreading that the most, I start the 14th. I have only met one sleever in person and she is a friend of the family. She has lost a lot of weight but she still eats whatever she wants and doesn't mine stopping at 170 lbs. I have a goal to ultimately being 130 lb. 35 lb. in less than two months is amazing! That makes me really excited. I have a few questions:

1)Did you have a pre-op diet and if so how hard was it?

2)Do you have your gall bladder, if you don't does that cause any more problems after surgery than it did before?

3)How much did you weigh before and your height.

Welcome Victoria!

I had gastric bypass in February-- I looked into the sleeve because my insurance had just started covering them but my surgeon had no experience with it and I didn't want to be his 1st sleeve, also I liked the long term data on my surgery.

A lot of doctors/insurance require a pre op diet- my surgeon wanted me to loose 10-15 lbs pre op- I ended up loosing 19lbs pre op.

Alice,

First off congrats on your 68 lbs. loss! Yeah, I wouldn't want to be the first patient either..lol Actually for the first appointment I had my mind set on the band because I didn't want to do anything too risky and b/c it was an out patient procedure. My surgeon suggested the sleeve and told me that she does lots of them and her sleeve patients have more sucess and less problems than her band patients, but the complications were mostly minor with the band. I have to be on a full liquid diet for 2 weeks before to shrink my liver. I don't necessarily have to diet while on it, I just have to make sure everything I eat can go through a straw and stay away from caffeine as well. Oh and I can't gain over 5 lbs before surgery but I think that would be easy

What protein supplements have you tried most people have to try a lot before they find one they like and there are lots of ways to make them taste better.

So far I have tried muscle milk and it taste like crap. My step father said he had some good protein powder, I am going to try a few more types before I start my liquid diet. I want to make sure I plan ahead so it will not be tempted to eat solids due to lack of choices. I'll look into those brands and websites you mentioned. Thanks. I think the coffee one sounds good but I will have to wait until after the surgery because coffee without caffeine is just not coffee to me. After surgery, and when the pre-op diet is over I do not have to take it protein supplements if I do not desire. I just have to eat enough protein like meats and such to get like 50 mg daily. I do have to take vitamins forever, which most people should anyway. Thanks again for the suggestions!

Just FYI 50 mgs of protein is really low-- my surgeon requires 60 mg as a minimum but from my research most wls patients need 80-100 mgs of protein a day.

BSN Lean Desserts protein powders taste really great. Chocolate Coconut Candy Bar, Banana Pudding, Whipped Vanilla Cream, Fresh Cinnamon Roll, Chocolate Fudge Pudding, Banana Nut Bread are the flavors. I buy them at www.Vitacost.com on line but GNC carries them but it costs a lot more. Shipping is also only $4.95 no matter how much you order. You can also get samples of a lot of different types of powders at www.Vitalady.com.

Thanks for all the suggestions. They sound yummy! I am going to order some samples. I am glad you told me about the samples because I would have been discouraged by buying the big tubs. The BSN were on vitalady too as samples. Thanks again!

Congratulations on having your surgery date set!! It is a very exciting time as you get ready to start the "NEW YOU." I'm glad that you found us here. Even if we've had different types of surgeries we are all doing it for one reason and can share our experiences.

1)Did you have a pre-op diet and if so how hard was it? I didn't which I was very surprised about since almost all other patients seemed to be. My surgeon said to "take it easy" a few days prior to my surgery. My liver was enlarged which caused the surgery to be an hour longer and I had two more incisions (laprascopic RNY) but I felt great after surgery. I was literally not in any pain/discomfort at all afterwards.

2)Do you have your gall bladder, if you don't does that cause any more problems after surgery than it did before? I still have my gall bladder and haven't had any issues since the surgery.

3)How much did you weigh before and your height. I was 5 foot 2 and 299 pounds when I started out and I ended up at 169 pounds before I got pregnant.
