In the first couple of months post op eating out can be somewhat of a pain but is not impossible.

Victoria,

I did the same thing - eating my favorite foods that I wouldn't be able to eat again.

Wow. Steak no more? Well if it something that I liked before and don't like afterwards then I guess I won't miss it. That means I have to put steak on my food bucket list for this week just in case..lol I already have hard times with the fried foods because I don't have my gall bladder, atleast it won't be something new. I'm not that big into pizza anyway, unless it is gormet and I rarely eat that anyways. My family does the pizza night too but I will just still to salad as well. The weird thing about the McDonald's is that that is how I already eat my Quarter pounders, no bread. I just eat the meat with the french fries which I'm sure I'll have to give those up. This week is going to be real fun eating all the nice foods like steak, sushi, pastas, etc. so when the 14th comes I'm not going to play I'm sticking to it and not looking back. Thanks for answering the questions by the way! I'm sure their will be plenty more in the next 3 weeks :)

Just FYI your tastes do change after surgery- I loved a Big Mac every once in a while pre op and now the thought of eating any McDonald's hamburger grosses me out.

What's up with not being able to tolerate rice and pastas? My surgeon told me about breads but only said the band patients had trouble with the other two. That is one of the reasons that I choose sleeve over band because of the rice issue. I live in Louisiana and we have rice with every meal. I want the surgery more than my rice but I didn't realize it was an issue. Now I do have a friend that had the sleeve and the other day I watched her eat a kolache AND drink a dr. pepper. I was like, "doesn't that hurt?" and she said, "oh yeah the indigestion will kill me in a few minutes." I don't think I could set myself up to be that miserable. I mean I will eat and learn, but not fall into bad eating habits that they tell you not to do.

My understanding is that rice and pasta swell in your stomach which is why you don't tolerate them well.

Hi, Victoria! Alice is absolutely right that your tastes change after surgery so you really won't know what you will or won't like.

Do you have a nutritionist that you've been seeing at your surgeon's office? Sometimes they have meal plans or lists of acceptable foods in the different stages of the post op diet. I'll attach the ones that I was given by my NUT.

I've never eaten sushi before but I think that you can still eat it as long as you tolerate it.

Steak- I have a hard time with them but not because I can't tolerate it but because I can't seem to break it down enough.

Rice- I eat it occassionally- maybe 2-3 times per month. I used to LOVE rice but because it isn't protein based I don't eat it more often.

As far as foods that I "can't" eat the only one that I need to stay away from seems to be ground beef. I've tried different fat levels of it and I just don't tolerate it all that well. I use ground turkey in lieu of the beef and that works for me.

Oh and Chinese food doesn't sit well with me either. I don't vomit or anything but it leaves me feeling icky for awhile after I eat.

I'm sorry I forgot to attach the meal plans.

The sleeve is different than gastric bypass as far as what you can eat.

After the initial liquids, mushies, pureed foods, I was able to introduce everything I loved.
