Well to make a very very long story short, my ex decided we needed a break about a month ago and i told him it was either a break up or we stay together and he chose a break up.
We havent talked for almost a month although the first week we did talk here and there but then he just stopped calling me even when i left messages, so i stopped calling completely..then he started calling me starting last thursday and at this time we hadnt talked for almost 3 weeks..he called me at 10pm(missed the call) then i called back, no answer, called the next day and left a message saying if it was important to call me and if not, well then dont, he called at about 12:30am the next day (missed the call again)but i did call back but no answer..so i was alittle confused at this point! then he called me on tuesday at about 1:30pm and then i was really confused because he knows i dont have the cell phone (i share with my mom,she has it during the day)and so he can only get ahold of me during the night..i called him later that night at about 6pm and NO ANSWER! then he calls me again at 12:30am! but i missed it because i was sleeping.
I have no idea what's going on with him but he's calling me but at weird hours, (for me anyways because at those times he knows i am not around the phone)so it's like he's calling but not really wanting to talk? like to see if i would answer.. but then why even try to call if you dont want to talk to someone cause they might answer and then what? he doesnt leave a message, or try calling the house phone, or the cell phone when he knows i have it..it's just so weird to me.
Any ideas?

Could be he's playing games to get you to call him, could be he has a new psycho girlfriend who's calling....
Whatever the case, I say stop calling him back. If he wants to leave you a message, he will. Send him the message that he can't get to you by playing games. If he truly wanted to talk, he wouldn't be doing this.
