Remaining Friends after Break-Up
Find a Conversation

After many months of wondering where our relationship was headed (been together 13 years, and boyfriend said he wanted his own place) and months of joking of him moving out, he decided to get an apartment when I was out of town at a family function.
Initially, the conversation began months ago because I wanted to know if he was ever going to marry me. He said he no longer knew and wanted to be on his own because he's never been on his own before. Flash-forward, he kept saying he was moving out tomorrow, so I jokingly gave him September 1st as the deadline. As mentioned, while I was away, he found a place of his own.
The question. I've known him since I was 17 (started dating at 18) and I'm now 31 (he's 30). His family is like my family, and while I know if this is the final break-up, as we've broken up before, I want to remain friends with him. Can I? What advice can you give?

Welcome to the board worddiva76,
It is possible to remain friends.... but usually not until after a period of healing.
