Personally, I'd ask him just to drop your stuff over on your porch. A period of healing is in order, no matter how amicable the breakup or what a nice guy your ex is. And healing is sped up by no contact.
Secondly, I am skeptical of the gut feeling. I find that, personally, it's hard to distinguish between the gut feeling and wishful thinking. And wishful thinking is a dangerous thing.
