My husband of twenty-five years is just checking out. He goes to work then comes home to eat dinner. After dinner, he does to the basement to watch TV then proceeds to go to sleep at 6:30. He will sleep a deep sleep until 12:00 or 1:00 and then wake up to watch more TV. He has become totally unapproachable and I don't know what to do. Help!

Hi Debbie

I'm afraid that I've got questions for you rather than answers - but I need a clearer picture of what's going on before I can respond properly.

You say that your husband has become totally unapproachable. Is he unapproachable in all matters or just those related to sleeping too much?

Is being unapproachable uncharacteristic for him?

Over sleeping can be symptomatic of a number of medical conditions. Has your husband seen a doctor? For that matter, does your husband think his over sleeping is an issue at all?

Could depression play a part in this? How was your marriage before his sleeping started? What about his work? Are there any other causes for his excess sleeping that you may be aware of?

Lastly, when you do approach him, what approaches have you tried? How do you word your discussion openers?

sorry for all the questions, but they really will give a clearer view of the situation.

And more questions still! I'm also in need of the answers to Aisha's questions, but I have a few others as well:

  • What about weekends/days off? What is his routine then?
  • How long have you been married/together?
  • How long has he been like this?
  • What does he say about it?

    >>How long have you been married/together?<<

You've interpreted Debbie's post differently to me. When Debbie referred to her husband of 25 years, I read it as they had been married for 25 years. Perhaps you understood it as he is 25 years old.

Debbie, is he 25 years old or have you been married 25 years?

Yep, I did. And now when I read it I only see it your way.

Hopefully, Debbie will clear that up, though I'm pretty sure you're right.

We have been married for 25 years. He is 46, but acts like he is 106.

Debbie, are you still there? Have you got any answers to our other questions?

Hey Debbie, just wanted you to know that you'll probably get lots of answers when our questions are cleared up ~ it's not that we're being nosy, rather, we need to understand more clearly before we know what to suggest ~
