Reality TV couple split--Q & A

Q. Well - I suppose you have heard the latest news - **drum roll please** - Meredith and Ian have separated!! No surprise there since you had doubts about their relationship lasting. As someone who is a huge fan of this couple, obsessed about them endlessly, collected everything about them she could get her hands on...I'd really be interested in revisiting your opinion of their relationship and what you think of why they split. I realize no one can ever know what caused the separation, but perhaps you can give it a try! It's very disheartening to most of us to see even these passionate relationships fall by the wayside. Is anyone ever intended to stay together?? (Marion)

A. I would not take this too seriously until the couple makes some type of statement, since it may just be hearsay and misquotes.
Even though I sometimes may “predict” a certain couple will not grow old together, it would actually be a little sad to see one more Reality TV couple separating!
If, in fact, M&I actually have called it quits, it is going to be difficult to ascertain the real reason(s), since I do not believe neither of them will agree to do a televised “Special” like Aaron and Helene did.

I wish both of them good luck!

Lisa - to each her own. I might ask why you ride Harleys! :-) For me, reality TV is a fun BREAK from reality. It can make you feel much better about yourself as a person besides it is hilarious and fun.

And peanut - I have to say I am devastated if this news is true. When I saw your post, I started saying "Please don't let it be Meredith and Ian, please don't let it be Meredith and Ian..." Sniff! If it is true, I think that probably the passion just kind of fizzled for them. Right from the start, their relationship was very "fiery". I think that can only last so long before you go to the humdrum of every day life. Maybe they couldn't handle the hum drum.

BTW - where did you find this info? Just curious.

Was this the last "Bachelor couple"?

They were the last Bachelorette couple which seem to have a little more staying power. The last two Bachelor couples hardly made it past the "After the Final Rose" show where they were reunited after a couple months. Mere and Ian have been together for well over a year since their show and kept pretty private lives.

I know "to each their own" but it's not reality at all. The only reality show on TV is "Cops" - that's it. Why do they even call them "reality"?

I guess I'm just at a loss as to why these shows get any ratings at all.

Admittedly, I am a reality TV show buff. I actually plan and coodinate Survivor Parties. I love The Amazing Race, Nanny 911, WifeSwap, and American Idol. It is shameful but true...I love Reality Based TV shows.

How are they "reality-based"?

I'm curious - not trying to be condescending.

How about "reality-ish"? I don't debate whether or not they are "Reality TV" or not (BTW - I despise COPS). Some "clever" person came up with that term. The reality based part comes in that for about 75% of it, these shows are not scripted and use real people (not actors) as the stars. Survivor is a good one, Amazing Race is one of the best and The Bachelor(ette) are my escape from reality. The people on there are often so mind-bogglingly stupid. They get ratings because they are fun, exciting shows to watch - seeing ordinary people in extraordinary situations is interesting. You get attached to the players and want to see what happens to them, good or bad. Survivor is one of the highest rated shows of all time. But this round of Bachelorette is getting pretty poor ratings so it might be gone after this.

You might think I am making this up as BS, but I think it is an interesting sociological thing. Each round of these shows is very different but very similar. One of the most interesting Survivors was the "All Stars" one where they all knew each other beforehand. The team dynamics were SO different. People were more worried about hurting each other's feelings and what people would think. But please don't knock us for something we like that you don't.

Just trying to understand, Vexer, okay? If you're gonna post about something on a public board you run the risk of people not liking it and commenting on it. Not a big deal.

I think they refer to it as "reality based" because the people that are on these shows are themselves. They are not actors. They are just viewers going in front of the camera. It is suppose to be unscripted. However we all know that there has to be three elements for entertaininment. 1-Establishing a story line, 2-Build up, and 3-Climax. So editors tweak the editing to make sure the the audience gets what they want.
