What's up with guys and age?

I've been doing OLD for 9 months now and have met 12 guys face-to-face. I really try to screen them before taking the time to meet. A couple had photos that were at least 10 years younger, I didn't even recognize them at the meeting. One guy was charming over the phone and we probably talked too much before meeting, but I was excited about meeting him, he sounded perfect! For some reason, I decided to check him out online and found him to be 7 years older than his stated age. Maybe this wasn't him? I asked him about it on our next phone conversation and he insisted his age was 59 and that wasn't him but someone else that lived in the same city. Well, he was the ONLY one I found in his city with his name. Ok, I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and meet him, and guess what, he looked like he was 66. After our meet and some info he told me about himself I was sure he was the 66 year old I found on the net. Now why would he even bother to meet me if he knew he was lying about his age, I just don't get it. What do these guys expect to gain? The truth will be discovered. I checked out another guy I was planning to meet and, age 59 again, and turns out he is 63! I'm 55 and 61 is my upper limit, I prefer someone close to my own age, and over 61 is off limits for me. Why do these guys lie about their age?

Most of them probably do it because they think it's ok to lie, in a nutshell, if it helps them get what they want, which is a chance to meet women who would otherwise not meet them if they didn't lie about their age. I'm guessing that they hope that you'll be so swept away by their charming personality that you won't care that they lied ;-)!
But knowing why they lie doesn't make it right or excuse it.
You will probably also experience a lot of guys lying about their height as well, if you haven't already.
But one thing I have to ask--how can you really tell how "old" someone looks? There's such a range out there, I could totally see a 59 year old "looking" 66 and vice versa.

Sheri,
I agree with your comment "But one thing I have to ask--how can you really tell how "old" someone looks? There's such a range out there, I could totally see a 59 year old "looking" 66 and vice versa." I would have thought he was an "aged" 59 had I not discovered he was really 66 before meeting him. And I have met guys that were actually 59 and looked much older and a few that looked younger than their stated age. I just wish guys would tell the truth, how can you ever hope to have a relationship based on lies? They also lie about their height, like that is so easy to see!
I agree, I don't see how people can expect to have an honest relationship when they aren't even honest in their profiles. But apparently some people think those kind of "small" lies are ok. I don't agree, but to each his or her own, I guess.
I posted about this recently so forgive me if you already read it but I got kind of blasted by a guy from CL because I called him on his lying about his age and told him I wasn't interested in meeting him because of his lies (I answered like 3 ads that turned out to all be his, but he had different ages on all of them!). His next ad had a line about how women expect guys to be "perfect". I rolled my eyes at that, *especially* since he emphasized that he wanted a partner who was "honest"!!!
I don't understand how some people think, but I've given up trying to understand...waste of time, LOL!
