Winks from non-members

It really drives me crazy when on Match.com non-members wink at me. I just don't see the point. I understand why Match allows non-members to send winks (in the hopes that they will be encouraged to join if they see that they got a wink in return.) But from the standpoint of those non-members who wink at me, what is the point?? I've tried winking back thinking that maybe they want to gauge my interest level and then join Match if I show I'm interested, but this never seems to happen.

Previously, non-members were able to view e-mails from members but not send a reply (I used to "hide" my personal e-mail address in it as a way for them to contact me) but this is no longer an option since Match doesn't allow non-members to view the e-mails they receive.

Anyone have any theories??

They might be "collecting" winks, so to speak. When I was on match, I'd wait until I had at least 5-6 people I was interested in contacting before I would join for a month. So they might be doing the same thing, and maybe they don't get enough women interested in them to make it worthwhile. Or maybe they just do it for the fun of it, to see if someone winks back. Who knows!
