A polite way to do this?

This is more of a manners question than a dating question, but I would appreciate input since none of my friends can give me an answer! :) I am a 20 year old college student living at home with my parents over the summer. Our family was invited to the wedding of the daughter of a family friend whom I hardly know. When my mother sent in the response card, she included me in the number of us who would attend, and failed to consult me and didn't tell me about it until recently. I, however, have a commitment to work that I cannot break especially since I took a few days off from work when my boyfriend came into town and also for oral surgery, so I cannot afford to take any more days off. My mother is making me take care of this. Is their any polite way to cancel my attendance? The wedding is slightly less than 3 weeks away.
Any input from brides, etc. would be appreciate!!

Pianoguy ISN'T a bride...nor does he plan to be one in the future...but the simplest way to solve the problem is to call up The Mother of the Bride!" Explain your working schedule conflict and that there's no way you can change things.
I'm sure "FUTURE MOM-IN-LAW" would feel much better knowing that there will be an extra place at one of the reception tables? A last minute guest or late respondent could certainly take your place!
So pick up the telephone and call her TODAY!
