Dating Time Before Engagement

How early is too early for an engagement? When you are both very sure that each other is the one? The only thing holding back is what other people would think due to the time period that we have been dating...other than that, they would all be happy for us.

If you are worried about others, DON'T BE! It's YOUR relationship, not there's!!!

That said, if you have been together for less than a year, then I do suggest that you set a wedding date at least 12-18 months in the future. That way you have time to plan and get to know each other more. If you're going to spend forever together, a longer engagement is nothing, and it shows everyone else (since you're so worried about them) that the two of you are serious.

Good luck!

Each person and relationship is unique and therefore so is timing. I think that an average length of time before engagement would be between 18 & 24 months. I think it takes longer than 1 year to truely get to know someone and to make a life commitment decision.

I would also encourage you to broaden your thinking on this beyond just the time factor. I think it is critically important to ask the question (to him and yourself) - What do you need to accomplish or have in place in your life PRIOR to marriage?

Thank you for your opinions, I agree with them. I feel the same way about it, and also wanted to add that we were planning on a little longer engagement than normal due to our goals before marriage.

Thanks again!
