Anyone Know Anything About Protitis??

Good morning,

I have a quick question… I know you all have seen my previous posts about what's gone on with my situation with that guy from the other state. Ok, well, First of all, you'll all be happy to know that I've got an appointment to see the counselor for tomorrow. Also, I have an appointment to see my gyn tomorrow morning for 2 reasons… One of which is the reason why I am writing… One reason is just because I want to get "checked out" just to be safe. The other is this:

AFTER everything happened, we were talking and he mentioned to me that he's been having some health problems. He hasn’t been to a dr about them, but mentioned crohns disease or protitis being possibilities with the symptoms he's getting (bloody stool, joint pain, diahrrhea, etc)… I didn’t think anything of this until I started having problems of my own since that last time we were together (Friday). I've been feeling uncomfortable (itchy) "down there" in the "other area" (trying to sound as nice as possible here, sorry about this)… I didn’t really worry until I started doing some research online about Protitis. I've read nothing but horrible things about it. It sounds like something that isnt just a gastro-intestinal thing. It seems like a sexual thing, and it mentioned HIV a lot with it. All over the place on the net… This is making me totally freak out. What do I do?? I mean, this guy told me after the fact so I didn’t know, (not saying I should've had sex with him) - and yes, it was unprotected. Stupid, I know. Please don’t even go there on that, I already know believe me. But what do I do now? I have the appointment with the gyno but what do I say? Does anyone here have any experience with this protitis thing? Anyone know anything about it?? He hasn’t gone to a dr. so I'm not sure that's what it is, and I don’t want to call him for obvious reasons. I mean, even if I did call him to ask, do you think he would admit to me if he knew he had anything wrong with him?? HELL NO!! So I just want to take care of this on my own. Please, if anyone knows anything about what this could be….

Did you mean "proctitis?" Because I'm not finding anything on the net regarding "protitis." My Pathophysiology book has no listing on it either.

I would look in my medical encyclopedia if I were at home. :(

I am going to put another message on here with the assumption that you meant to type "proctitis." I used to work in a Gastro-Interology Lab at a metropolitan hospital so I have some (admittedly very limited) experience with this.

Warning: I'm just going to use medical terms here. So if anyone has a weak disposition, you probably should just stop reading...

Basically, proctitis is the inflamation of the rectal lining. It can be caused by various GI problems (colitis), it can be caused by certain medications, bacteria, it can be caused by rectal intercourse, or it can be a side-effect of sexually transmitted diseases.

Based on what you have written in your first post, I would have to ask you if you mean your problems "down there" are in your vaginal region or rectal region. And then I would ask you if you had had vaginal or rectal intercourse recently.

These are all questions your doctor or practioner will probably ask you as well.

More than likely, if he has had proctitis as a result of GI problems, your problems are probably not an STD. Unless he's got one of those as well as his GI problems and neglected to tell you. If you had rectal sex with him, it's likely you've got some soreness, which IS proctitis in the medical sense but not because of any STD or infection.

There are a variety of things that could be going on here. Best to talk to your doctor about it all.

might be proctitis. He said bloody stools and joint pain were a couple of symptoms.

As I said on the other board, speculation is a bad idea right now. Honestly, you can imagine things to be almost any kind of disease if you keep speculating. But when you keep speculating, your fear and panic only increase. The only sure thing is to wait until you see your doctor tomorrow.

Agreed. There is only so much diagnostics that can be done via Web page. And not knowing all the specifics only leads to speculation. Maybe this and maybe that. Leading ultimately to nothing at all.

To the OP:

Only a doctor or practioner can fully answer your questions and make an informed diagnosis. Best wait until you see him/her, and make sure you are honest about everything. Believe me - they've heard it all and they are there to help you. Until then, try not to worry too much. I know - easier said than done. :)
